Running back would have been at the top of the list of needs for the 2020 recruiting class if you polled Notre Dame fans following National Signing Day in February.

Notre Dame will have a chance to land its top target on the running back board on Thursday afternoon as 2020 Thomas Dale (Va.) running back Chris Tyree‍ will make his college decision.

The 5-foot-9, 175-pounder will choose between Alabama, Notre Dame and Oklahoma, but it’s really a two-team race as the Crimson Tide have faded in recent months.

Tyree made his first trip to South Bend in December to watch Notre Dame practice for the Cotton Bowl and then returned in March to watch spring ball. Oklahoma then hosted him in April for an official visit and it seemed as if all the momentum was with the Sooners.

There were more than rumblings the four-star prospect was ready to make a decision to play college football in Norman, but Chip Long and Lance Taylor were able to convince Tyree to delay his decision.

The Virginia native had previously set an official visit to Notre Dame for June 21st and those plans were finalized shortly after the Irish calmed the waters.

A few weeks later, Tyree announced he would be making his college decision on May 23rd to the surprise of some, but we had told ISD readers Notre Dame had been gaining momentum since Tyree slowed the process down.

We feel Notre Dame is the favorite heading into Thursday’s decision, but if there is one thing you can count on in recruiting is you can never count on anything in recruiting.

He said it: “It’s definitely a brotherhood there with everybody. There aren’t really any cliques or anything. If you see one teammate there, you’re bound to see mostly the whole team. That’s what I like to see. It’s a real brotherhood.” – Tyree following his visit in March

His coach said it: “He was able to go out to Oklahoma and get a better understanding of the players, the locker room, a better view of campus and see some of the academic stuff. It’s now at a point where he can compare apples to apples.

“When he does that, he’ll look at all three and compare apples to apples to come up with the best decision for Chris Tyree.” – Thomas Dale head coach Kevin Tucker
