No. 9 Notre Dame at Louisville

Cardinal Stadium |8:00 p.m. ET | ESPN

Game Week Articles | Roster| Depth ChartSchedule |Staff Predictions

And So it Begins

It’s here. Notre Dame had to wait a few extra days, but football season is officially here for the Fighting Irish. First-year Louisville head coach Scott Satterfield will make his debut and he’ll likely have his hands full on Monday night as the Irish enter the game as the far superior team.

Louisville has 18 players who started at least five games last season, so the Cardinals are experienced, but it is the same players who gave up in the middle of the 2018 season.

Notre Dame simply needs to execute and stay out of their own way to leave Louisville with a victory. If the Irish can build good habits, it would be a positive as Notre Dame is looking to get back to the College Football Playoff.

Five Players To Watch

Notre Dame WR Chase Claypool
He had a dominant fall camp after a terrific spring. Now we get to see if it translates to the games. Look for him to win consistently on the 50/50 balls. He should have a big day on his way to a monster senior season.

Louisville LB Rodjay Burns
Burns started nine games at cornerback last season, but struggled like most players on Louisville's defense did. He moved to linebacker and is playing their version of the Rover. Can he cover a slot like Lawrence Keys? Expect to see Burns blitzing quite a bit.

Notre Dame S Kyle Hamilton
How much will Hamilton play? We don't know, but everyone is excited to find out. No one will be shocked if he ends up making an impact play or two even if he's only sees limited action in his first action in college football.

Louisville WR Tutu Atwell
The smallest player on Louisville's roster is probably the fastest. If they are going to have a chance in this matchup, they need someone like Atwell to produce an explosive play.

Notre Dame LB Drew White
All eyes will be on the linebacker position and White in his first start. He has big shoes to fill at Mike linebacker and must play well to keep his spot. It will be interesting to see how many snaps he plays compared to others who will play at inside linebacker.

By The Numbers

1 - Notre Dame will be playing its first game ever on Labor Day Monday.

2 - Monday will be the second meeting between Notre Dame and Louisville.

11 - Notre Dame has won 11 consecutive games at Notre Dame Stadium. It's the third-longest winning streak at home for the Irish since the stadium opened in 1930.

77 - Notre Dame 13-4 (.765) all-time in season-opening prime time games.

200 - Notre Dame is the only FBS program with three different 200-yard rushers in the last two seasons.

Quotes of the Week

Notre Dame QB Ian Book:
“I feel like every game at Notre Dame is a statement game. We have a big target on our back. There are a lot of haters and doubters. There is a lot of talk about not being in a conference and winning every game.

“We know that. We try to treat every game like a playoff game. We definitely want to go 1-0. That’s what we’re thinking about and focused on.”

Notre Dame S Alohi Gilman:
“We’re not sitting back on Monday night. This game doesn’t have to be close.”

Notre Dame DE Khalid Kareem:
“We were right there. We tasted it. We were a game away from a National Championship. We’re hungry and ready. This group of guys is a very talented group of people. We can go out and show the world what we can do.”

Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly:
“I'll just leave it at this. One guy that we haven't talked much about, and I will just say that he's had his best camp since he's been here is Daelin Hayes. I think that says a lot about what we can do when we haven't talked about a guy like that.”

He's missed seen routes a few times that have been wide open. Frustrating

27 run plays and 12 pass plays in the first half. Need to get Book into a rhythm.

Defense started out poorly without a QB spy and was getting beat by the speed option/quick sprint run plays. They seemed to have rolled in 1-2 guys to spy Pass and have done a good job locking that back down.

Offense, aside from the running game, looks atrocious. First drive was great with the running, but it appears Jahmir is out for a bit and Book has the happy feet/tremors about staying in the pocket. He has been locking in to Claypool and not looking off or to other check downs. He seems to be going (1) look at Claypool/primary option (2) if not (1), tuck and run. TE seams and drags have been open, but maybe Book is too short to see them?
Asmar Biahl (Sp #22) should not play. He was bad last year and is just not a good football player. Anyone else is better IMO on our roster. Where are you Bo Bauer :-)

Agree, Bilal has been biting on PA and not playing his reads. The instincts just aren't there to be a starter.

I know IrishLoyal personally. He's a great guy and funny as hell. He's emotional about ND but so is this entire board. Every time someone is super negative, the super homers come out and attack the guy. And what I guarantee you is happening, is all the angry posts are fueling IrishLoyal to post more and more.

The guy is a complete tool and POS.

I am a fan, not a homer. There are issues to be resolved. No doubt.

But give it a f'ing rest.

You've never met him on your life, but have him totally pegged? Maybe stop being the message board sheriff if you're just going to insult other posters and call them names.

Good news is we played as poorly as possible and are still up...

Book needs to show big time important.

Staggering to see Ian panic as he is. Was there NO sign of this in camp? Really?!

Long is no mental giant so far tonight. Then again, with a QB as erratic as IB, what can you do? Wait... I know!!! RUN it with the 6 mooses up front.

This is a stunning and shocking demonstration by the ND offense and staff.

BLG is not wrong here. Coney and Drue masked a lot of his deficencies last year. His instincts are not there. He doesn't make plays.

Definitely a disappointing half, but lest we forget that this is the first half of the first game of the season. Not everything is going to go perfectly and it's good for this team to face some early adversity on the road against a team with ACC talent. I think we saw the impact that losing Jafar had on the offense as he is one of NDs best players and that's just another guy out along with Young and Kmet.

I'm disappointed in Book but if that's the worst that it can get for him than I'm encouraged. He didn't make any huge mistakes outside of the fumble, he just needs to let it loose and make some plays. He definitely looks to run way too early and that will be a problem against teams with better pass rushes.

I thought that the defense took a step forward with White and Owusu playing well in the 2nd quarter. Bilal just isn't the answer at Buck so hopefully Simon, Genmark-Heath or Lamb can step forward there.

The pass rush has also been fairly disappointing but I don't expect that to continue.

Really hurts the passing game IMO. Jafar was playing a lot in the slot.

I guess the defensive coaches saw what I saw with Bilal, as he played minimal snaps after a terrible start. And to be clear, I'm rooting for the kid. It made sense to start him because of the road environment and his experience. But he played like a stinky butthole. And Simon made quite a few mistakes but we have seen what we get from Bilal so that was a welcome move,
Gilman created another turnover. But you keep telling everyone he's no good. I'm confused.

I second the Bilal statements. Good athlete, not a good football player at this level.

Pride in the boundary is scary too...

Book is a mystery to me. I have seen him play so much better. If he settles in, ND canaybe make some big plays. Right now, very pedestrian on O.

Well, the comedy of errors that was the first half is over. Let's hope they made adjustments and shut out Louisville in the second half and Book settles down.

Glad I took tomorrow off. This game is causing me to drink a lot! Go Irish!

Certainly know his type.

Insulting the crap out of kids and families who If likely put more of their heart into Notre Dame football then you orLoyal ever gave a thought about.

But please keep defending the internet tough guy and his frustration.

I'll bet Ian Book, the pansy he has referred to multiple times in this thread, would take Loyal behind the stadium and kick his tail around the block. So , yes please keep defending your buddy. I believe I am very close to accurate about your friend.

Lea takes to long to make adjustments and Book looks to have still be in panic mode in the pocket. When he first took over for Wimbush last year he played relaxed and went though his progressions and seemed mentally tough. What happened to that Ian Book?

It seems that our offensive lineman and the tight end are at times not getting out of the way of the QB and RB patch way.

Again, the front 4 is laying waste to their offensive line and our back 7 is getting wall every time.

Back to what they were doing early in the game.

I just don't understand how our linebackers can be this bad at filling holes.

Our DL could not make it easier for them.

They will go right after #22. I would make him stop someone 1-1. How as this STARTING on a Final 4 team. Wowzers were Drue and Coney excellent. This is two down territory as well hopefully our big DE's can make something happen.
