Observations from Sunday's Under Armour Camp
It was a light list in Columbus as it relates to Notre Dame recruiting, as essentially 2026 offensive line commits Sullivan Garvin and Ben Nichols competed, while 2027 receiver Jamier Brown also worked out. GARVIN- The 6-foot-5, 300-pounder keeps getting bigger every time I see him in person. He doesn't have the frame of Nichols, but that's OK as he's much more athletic. I wouldn't say he's a finesse player, but he's agile and has some athletic traits to his game. Garvin is very technical in his game. He received praise multiple times for his pass pro sets in individual drills. In fact, I would say Garvin was one of the smoothest offensive linemen I've seen in pass pro sets as it relates to footwork in drills. Now, it's a different game when there is a defender, but the Michigan native has a solid foundation to build on. Garvin needs to get stronger as he was overpowered a couple times in one-on-ones, but that comes with him and more weight. He has a mean streak to him and I'd like for that to come out a little more. Of course it's a camp and no one is trying to get hurt, so that's also worth pointing out. In all, Garvin is on the right track. He's much better than he was last summer at Irish Invasion and that's what you want to see. NICHOLS- I continue to think he's a bit underrated. He's a powerful human and you see that when the pads come on. Is he the most athletic guard? No, but there is a lot merit in being able to move a defender off the line of scrimmage. Sometimes coaches can overthink and I don't think Joe Rudolph did. Similar to Garvin, Nichols has impressive footwork in pass pro drills. He's under control and doesn't get off balance in that setting. Nichols also showed well when firing off in a run blocking drill. Nichols tried to jump set a couple guys and lost reps as he got himself off balance. In a 1-on-1 setting during a camp, few can recover, so not the end of the world. The Michigan native did dislocate his finger and it didn't stop him from working out. Nichols did earn an invite to the Under Armour All-American Game, which most felt 2026 Ohio State offensive line commit Sam Greer was a lock to get. When it comes to Garvin and Nichols, I was also impressed with their leadership and confidence. Both led the offensive line group to the field and were part of a small group of OL who were vocal during the camp. The other impressive piece was both were willing to take reps at tackle, which isn't completely foreign as that's the position both play in high school, but in a camp, it can be risky. Neither hesitated and took reps on the edge. That said, I would expect both to be interior players for Notre Dame. Also of note, Ohio State head coach Ryan Day was at the camp and one of the first things he wanted to know was where and who the Notre Dame offensive line commits were. Pretty telling the job Notre Dame has done and is doing on the recruiting trail with offensive lineman. BROWN- If you didn't know who Brown was and were watching the camp, it wouldn't take long to see who the top 10 player in the country was on the field. Everything he does is smooth and effortless. Last year, Brown was considered an athlete, but a year later, the Ohio State commit is clearly one of the best receivers in the country. There wasn't a DB who could stick with him if they gave him space. Brown did get bottled up a few times in press coverage as he's not quite strong enough (yet) to win back inside or hand fight to create a touch more space. That said, Brown came down with multiple catches in traffic and made a few defensive backs look silly. If you give him any type of cushion in a one-on-one drill, it's over. Brown did visit Notre Dame last week, but stated it was more for him to visit Aamil Wagner with his coaching staff than him being overly interested in Notre Dame. Marcus Freeman and Mike Mickens might be alum of his high school, but Brown seemed very set in his commitment to Ohio State with his words, but also his OSU tattoo and chain. Barring Brian Hartline leaving his alma mater, I'm not sure Brown will give Notre Dame much thought as it relates to a flip. NOTES- 2027 Andrean (Ind.) linebacker Ethan Reyna took home LB MVP awards. He has offers from Miami (OH), Toledo and Western Michigan. I think he probably projects as a mid-level P4 kid at this point, but Andrea is known to produce quality linebackers. - 2027 Villa Angela-St. Joseph (Ohio) tight end D'Angeli White is a massive human. He's listed at 6-5, 235, but I think he's bigger. He reminded me a bit of Mitchell Evans where he might be one bad month of dieting away from being a left tackle prospect. He earned an invite to the UA Future 50 event. He's someone I'm going to look into a bit more. - 2026 Northrop (Ind.) receiver Jerquaden Guilford was the second best receiver in the camp behind Brown. He's going to be a very good college football player. He recently decommitted from Penn State. He's someone who can play in the boundary, so it'll be interesting to see if Notre Dame wants to get another eval on him this spring. He attended Irish Invasion last summer, but had the flu so he didn't look great, so Notre Dame didn't offer. - 2027 Mount Carmel (Ill.) receiver Quentin Burrell was there and holds an offer from Notre Dame, but he he was a ways to go. He's a good receiver, but he had some drops today. I won't hold that against him as there is zero chemistry between the receivers and quarterbacks. I want to see him live again, but there's a difference between Brown/Guilford and Burrell from an athletic standpoint. I'll have videos posted tomorrow.

National Average Rating

The National Average Rating is a proprietary formula that calculates an industry-wide aggregate rating for each recruiting prospect. The formula includes publicly listed grades, scores, ratings and rankings by national recruiting services, along with a Irish Sports Daily rating. Combining the data provides a rating for each prospect, which is then normalized to fit the Irish Sports Daily Rating 100-point scale.

The intent of this rating is to provide Irish Sports Daily readers with a comprehensive snapshot of how individual prospects rank nationally.

Staff Predictions

The predictions represent which school each staff member believes will ultimately sign the recruit, and the confidence meter represents his level of certainty in that outcome.

Example #1

If the predicted school is Notre Dame and confidence is set to “High”, then the staff member is saying “I believe that this recruit will ultimately sign with Notre Dame and I feel very certain about that.”

Example #2

If the predicted school is “Alabama” and confidence is set to “Low,” then the staff member is saying “I believe that this recruit will ultimately sign with Alabama, but I’m not very certain about that.”
