When Notre Dame reached out to Jack Nickel‍ recently, the 2022 Georgia tight end didn’t wait long to respond.

“The recruiting director Aaryn Kearney reached out to my coach about a week or two ago,” the 6-foot-4, 227-pounder said. “He was just saying he wanted to get me down for a game of my choice. I decided the USC game probably the most intense one.”

So, the Milton High School standout will be in South Bend for the Irish’s primetime game against the Trojans on Oct. 12th.

Nickel has several offers already, but was still honored to be contacted by Notre Dame.

“It actually feels great because Notre Dame has such a great tradition,” he explained. “They’ve been good since the 1920s, when Knute Rockne was there. They’ve always been great. Just having a highly-respected university like that reach out just means a lot.”

He’s looking forward to taking the next steps of the process with the Irish through the visit.

“I’ve never been to Notre Dame, so I just want to see the campus and how the game atmosphere is,” he said. “I also need to get a relationship going with the coaches.”

Nickel already has eight offers including scholarships from Florida State, Kentucky, Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, Vanderbilt and Purdue among others.

“I try not to think about it that much,” he said of the early offers. “I really just try to start focusing on being a really good high school player right now. It is really cool though to have great options at such a young age.”

Nickel believes college coaches like his versatility as a tight end.

“I can put my hand in the dirt and really block anyone they want me to,” he said. “I can go up against anybody one-on-one in the passing game as well. They think it’s really cool that I can kick field goals also.

“I’m probably the biggest kicker in the state.”

Nickel has already taken unofficial visits to Penn State, Ohio State, Florida State, Georgia, Kentucky and Michigan.

“I’m going to go see Alabama, I’ll be seeing Penn State,” he said of his plans this fall. “I’ll be going to a Georgia game, a Georgia Tech game and a Florida State game for sure. Maybe a couple of others, but I’m not sure yet. But those ones I’ll definitely be making it up for.”

Nickel, who wants to major in Business, will be looking closely at two factors when picking a school.

“I’d say it’s a really close tie between academics and relationships with the coaching staff.”
