Kyle Johnson‍ reached out to Notre Dame and when he learned he was invited to check out a game in South Bend, the 2022 Michigan safety/linebacker jumped on the opportunity, locking in his presence for Saturday’s home game against Virginia Tech.

“I sent my film out and one of the recruiters from ND reached out to my Coach, Ron Bellamy, and said they wanted me to come down to tour the campus and see a game and meet the whole coaching staff,” Johnson told Irish Sports Daily. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to visit one of the most historical universities in the world.”

The 6-foot-1, 190-pounder from powerhouse West Bloomfield High School has a good general sense of the history in South Bend.

“I know that Notre Dame is one of the best schools in the world,” he said. “I know Notre Dame has graduated great and successful players such as Joe Montana and Tim Brown.  I’m familiar with the Four Horsemen, Knute Rockne. They're great role models.

“I'm also aware that ND has some of the best programs that I am interested in such as Engineering, Aerospace and others.”

Johnson is hoping for the opportunity to meet with coaches and players and start building relationships during the trip.

“Also, I want to experience some of the atmosphere that Notre Dame has that I see all the time on television and hear people talk about,” he added.

Johnson visited Purdue a couple weeks back and expects to hit some more games in the months to come.

“My plan is to go see more schools I have been invited to see after the season,” he explained. “My goal currently is to help my team win a State Championship.”

Johnson plays on a loaded West Bloomfield squad that includes 2020 Michigan linebacker commit Cornell Wheeler, 2020 Michigan safety commit Makari Paige and elite 2021 running back Donovan Edwards.

Johnson gives credit to those guys and Bellamy in helping groom him to become one of the program’s next top targets.

He’s already receiving interest from schools like Michigan, Michigan State, Purdue, Arizona State, Cal, and Vanderbilt. In addition to his athleticism, college scouts have told Johnson they like his work ethic, leadership and eagerness to learn.

“I am looking for a school that can provide me a well-rounded experience and a family atmosphere. While football is very important to me, my education is just as important.”
