Notre Dame’s pursuit of Chaz Chambliss‍ continued last week, when the Irish sent assistant coach Mike Elston to Carrollton High School to check on the 2021 Georgia linebacker.

“The biggest thing was talking to me about getting him up on a visit, getting him up there to see campus and how they think he’d be a good fit; obviously athletically, but academically too because Chaz is a good student,” Carrollton head coach Sean Calhoun said.

“They’re just trying to get him up there. The Notre Dame campus is a special place and plus, the new facility, get up there and see that.”

Calhoun isn’t sure yet whether the 6-foot-3, 240-pound Chambliss will be able to make the trip.

“I cannot give you either way because I have not sat down to speak with Chaz about it,” the coach said. “Hopefully within the next couple of weeks I’ll sit down and see where his brain is, where his mindset is about the offers he has and visits and everything like that.

“I know he’s mentioned it before.”

Calhoun has been impressed with Elston’s recruiting approach.

“Great guy,” he said. “He does a great job of representing his university to the fullest, straight professional, very personable guy. He was a joy to have here. He’s been down here a couple of times.”

Calhoun noted that Carrollton has a couple of younger prospects who could be worthy of the kind of attention Chambliss has garnered one day.

“Maybe Notre Dame will be able to go on a couple of kids we have outside of Chaz too,” the coach said.

In addition to the Irish, Chambliss’ offer sheet includes schools like Georgia, Alabama, Clemson, LSU, Michigan, Ohio State and Texas A&M among others.

Calhoun said it’s “fantastic” to have players like Chambliss, who bring so much attention to the program.

“The only sad deal is that we’ve only got Chaz for one more season,” he said. “But when you’ve got good players, that instantly makes you a better coach. On top of that, when they’re good people and good students, they’re just great to be around. You miss them so much when they’re done with football or graduate. That’s the cycle of being a coach no matter what level. At some point, they’re going to leave you.

“We’ve got to use him up while we’ve got him.”
