Virginia has been kind to Notre Dame over the last few years and the Irish are back as 2022 safety Sherrod Covil Jr.‍ picked up an offer this week.

The Oscar Smith star had been in communication with Notre Dame, so the offer wasn't necessarily a surprise.

"I've been in contact with Notre Dame for the past three weeks," Covil told Irish Sports Daily. "I felt like it was coming sooner or later."

Defensive coordinator Clark Lea gave him the good news, which meant a little more to the Virginia native.

"Coach Clark Lea gave me the offer," Covil stated. "I've been in contact a lot with Coach (Nick)  Lezynski.

"It was cool to get it from the defensive coordinator."

The 6-foot, 185-pounder admits he needs to look more into Notre Dame, but he is familiar with what the Irish bring to the table.

"I need to do a little bit more research on Notre Dame," explained Covil. "I watched them growing up, so I know about them and I know they're a real big-time program."

Covil already boasts an impressive offer list of Alabama, Boston College, Coastal Carolina, East Carolina, Georgia Tech, Indiana, Liberty, Michigan, Michigan State, NC State, Notre Dame, Penn State, Pitt, Southern Miss, Tennessee, Virginia and Virginia Tech.

Michigan and Penn State are two programs that have been aggressive to this point and Covil is embracing the opportunity.

"I'm very grateful for all of this to be happening," Covil said. "I've worked hard for it."

On the field, Covil's physicality jumps off the screen, but it's also his speed that has impressed coaches from across the country.

"My strength is my speed and how fast I can get to the ball," stated Covil. "I can also track the ball well."

"I want to get a little bit faster, too."

Covil is just getting his recruitment started and he already knows a few things he'll be paying close attention to when he can visit schools again.

"I'm looking at academics and if the school has the program I want to do when I go to college," said Covil. "I'm also looking at how much love the school is giving me.

"I'm looking at the chance of me going to the NFL coming out of that school and how many players they have going to the NFL."
