2021 DE Will Schweitzer Breaks Down Flip To Notre Dame
It may not have been a direct process, but in the end the decision was a clear one for Will Schweitzer.
On Sunday, the 2021 California defensive end announced he was flipping his commitment from Nebraska to Notre Dame.
“It checked every single box; academics, football and even religion,” the 6-foot-4, 220-pounder said of Notre Dame. “I’m a Catholic person myself. That religious value actually added an extra boost for them.
“Obviously, they’re an amazing football program, that was number one, with great coaches and the academic piece, getting a great degree, was huge as well.”
Schweitzer, who plans to major in Business, will play the Vyper position for the Irish.
“I feel like my skills have always been the edge,” says Schweitzer, who plays middle linebacker for Los Gatos High School.
“I played a lot in the middle in high school just because of team needs, but as I keep growing and putting on size, I feel like rushing off the edge is where I belong.”
Notre Dame assistants Clark Lea and Brian Polian had been recruiting Schweitzer for a while, initially as an inside linebacker, before deciding to bring Mike Elston into the mix and offering as a defensive end within the last couple weeks.
“They’re great,” he said of the Irish coaches. “I couldn’t imagine getting coached by anyone else. Those guys know what they’re doing. They’re great people.”
Schweitzer was actually able to take an independent unofficial visit to South Bend earlier this month, which really sealed the deal for him.
Still, making the flip from Nebraska, where he committed back in June, was difficult.
“I just had to put myself first and think about life football-wise, life after football and what that degree from Notre Dame means.”
