Vito Campanile had to laugh when asked if 2022 New Jersey quarterback Steve Angeli‍ would be taking the offer he received from Notre Dame on Monday night seriously.

“Oh, beyond seriously,” the Bergen Catholic High School head coach said, making it clear how important the offer from the Irish was to Angeli.

“He’s been fired up about a couple of them, but this one is really special.”

Notre Dame added itself to a list that already included schools like LSU, Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State, Nebraska, Miami and West Virginia among several others.

“I know for his family, it’s really something that’s important to them,” Campanile said. “Obviously, if you’re a quarterback and have the opportunity to be a part of Notre Dame, that’s a pretty tough one not to be excited about.”

Campanile called Angeli “a five-tool talent.”

“He’s about as smart of a player as I’ve ever been around,” the coach continued. “When you put his ability to process the game and his work ethic, I think he’s ranked third in the class academically, he’s a 4.0-plus student.

“He’s everything Notre Dame is. He has an uncle who played there in the 40s, so it’s a tremendous opportunity for him. We’re all really excited.”

On the field, Campanile said he “does pretty much everything well.”

“He is really just a great fit for what Notre Dame has been about,” he continued. “He can definitely run the Zone Read and read any player on the defensive line as far as the running game. He can tuck the ball down.

“For a kid who is 6-3-plus and 210 pounds, he can fly. I think he was a 4.77 at Ohio State as a sophomore. They offered him before he even played a varsity game.”

Campanile has been impressed with how much Angeli has developed over the past several months both physically and as a passer.

“He’s grown another inch, so he’s a little over 6-3.5, about 6-3.5 right now,” the coach said. “He’s 209 pounds and he’s still 16 years old. Then, when he pulls the ball down, he’s as fast as any guy on the field. He’s a dynamic talent.

“I would definitely call him a dropback guy to the point where he’s throwing 15-yard outs right now through people’s heads. And in the vertical game, he just gives you a different element. It’s been rare for me to see kids with that throwing ability be able to run the way he runs.”

Campanile stressed that Angeli and his family aren’t the only ones excited about the offer, the entire Bergen Catholic program is fired up.

“I’ve said this on basically every kid we’ve had who’s been offered by Notre Dame, to me, it’s a place that I don’t understand how you don’t look at that with eyes wide open. Looking at it from the parents’ side of it, it’s everything that you want to be about.”
