2018 receiver Bryson Jackson will always remember December 6th, 2016, as he received his first scholarship to play football, as it’s likely to be the first of many for the 6-foot-1, 170-pounder. Notre Dame was the school to offer first and it brought the St. Pius X (Texas) speedster to tears.
“I was at lunch at the time and Coach Scott Booker came by our school,” Jackson told Irish Sports Daily on Monday. “He said my highlight film looked good and as he left, Coach (Stephen) Hill told me to meet him in his office. As I walked in, the whole coaching staff was in there. He told me he was proud of me because I had worked real hard this season and congratulations, as I had been offered a full-ride to Notre Dame.
“As he told me, I broke down in tears and I started crying. It’s a blessing to receive something like this as my first offer. It’s a huge honor after moving from school to school to make something out of my life.”
Jackson’s tears were full of joy and the fact that it will bring a sense of relief for his mother.
“It was a relief to know that mom and my can now see everything they have done for me is paying off,” he explained. “They have raised their son to be the right man. It felt really good to know I can take some stress off of her from now on.
“Knowing I am sitting on a great offer for athletics, but also academics is amazing.”
The Texas native isn’t a new name to many schools, but as the first school to offer, Notre Dame making a commitment to him means the world to Jackson.
“For it to be my first offer, it will definitely stay as one of my best ones,” stated Jackson. ‘It will be at the top of the list for sure. A lot of schools have talked to me, but for Notre Dame to step up and believe in me, it’s just a blessing. It will always be at the top of the list.
“Right before Coach called me into his office, I was sitting with one of my defensive lineman and he just got an offer from Army. I was telling him how proud of him I was and that I was chasing my first offer. He told me it was going to come and the next thing I know I get called into the office and I got it. It’s an honor.”
The rising junior has been on trips to the top programs in Texas, so it’s likely going to be a battle to get him out of the Lone Star State.
“I have been on some visits to Houston and I’ve talked to Tom Herman personally,” Jackson said. “I really like U of H and after he left, Major Applewhite has talked to me. I still love Houston because it’s the hometown school. It’s a great environment and a great program.
“I’ve been on visits to Texas and that was one of my dream schools growing up. I went on a visit to Texas A&M and that was a great environment. I talked to Noel Mazzone from A&M and that went very.”
It’s clear Notre Dame shot up Jackson’s list with Monday’s offer, but Jackson also hopes to hear from a few of his childhood favorites.
“The dreams schools I want to also look at me are Florida, Florida State and Oklahoma,” he stated. “Those are the schools I grew up being a fan of, so I hope to hear from those schools too.”
As for a visit to South Bend, Jackson expects to take a visit sooner than later to see what the Irish have to offer.
“I’ll be able to make it up there for sure,” Jackson said. “I’ll plan the date with my parents and I’ll let everyone know when I’ll be making my trip to Notre Dame.
“I will make sure to get to Notre Dame and couple other schools, while attending some camps at the same time.”
The junior prospect recorded 69 receptions for 1,607 yards and 22 total scores in 2016.
