Notre Dame has shown preliminary interest in Maleek McNeil‍.

The massive 2022 offensive lineman is appreciative of that interest and hopeful the two sides can take further steps.

“So far, it’s been mostly messaging and mail, but they reach out on a regular basis,” the 6-foot-8, 340-pounder says. “I’m hoping we get to know each other better over the next few months...they’ve been busy winning.”

McNeil is a New York native, who attends the Williston Northampton School in Massachusetts.

He has early offers from Duke, Boston College, UMass, Rutgers and Central Michigan along with interest from a host of other schools.

“I’m in touch with quite a few schools right now,” he says. “As you can imagine though between classes and school activities, workouts and lifts, nutrition meetings and other obligations, I don’t have a lot of free time, but the schools that I speak to every week, if not more, are Rutgers and Boston College.”

He’s aware of Notre Dame’s history and reputation.

“I know it’s a great school and I’m really looking forward to learning more about it,” he says. “It’s an icon and I’m half Irish.”

McNeil says he would “absolutely” welcome the chance to visit South Bend.

“I would just want to see the normal everyday things,” he says. “See the campus and facilities, meet the people, get a real feel for the culture, and figure out what my day-to-day would be like if I went there.”

A gifted athlete, McNeil plays basketball with perennial New York AAU power Pro Scholar Athletics.

McNeil has spoken with his family about some schools that he’d like to visit when he has the chance, but says he isn’t yet at the point of coming up with a short list of favorites.

“Right now, my focus is just on executing in my classes and on the field,” he says.

He does have an idea of what he’ll be looking for when it comes time to cut his list and eventually pick one school.

“With me, I’m going to be looking for the best overall fit, not just for me but for the team also. Because of my family, and because of Pro Scholar Athletics and because of the Williston Northampton School, I have a lot of great opportunities to choose from. It’ll be a hard decision when the time comes but I’m fortunate.”
