Coach | Notre Dame RB Commit Isaiah Rogers Checks The Boxes
Isaiah Rogers will bring a rare combination of speed and physicality to Notre Dame, something his high school head coach saw from the moment he stepped on the field.
The 2027 Massachusetts running back announced his commitment to the Irish on Monday following a visit to South Bend earlier in the month, giving Notre Dame a versatile piece for its backfield.
At Springfield Central High School, the 5-foot-11, 210-pounder’s combination has been evident from the start.
“He was physical like that as a freshman,” head coach Bill Watson told Irish Sports Daily. “We didn’t really plan on playing him early, but he forced us to.”
That early impact wasn’t by chance.
“He did it by the way he practiced every day and how effective he was,” Watson said. “He forced his way onto the field and never looked back.”
Rogers has continued to build on that foundation, developing into a multi-dimensional back who can impact the game in a variety of ways.
“He’s a physical kid, explosive,” Watson said. “He can catch the ball out of the backfield, he’s good in protection and obviously he can run with the football. He can hurt teams in a lot of different ways.”
That versatility is paired with a running style that continues to evolve.
“Sometimes he’s patient through the hole and finds it, and sometimes he’s hitting it full speed and running through defenders,” Watson said. “At the next level, it’s about continuing to grow with that and making quicker decisions because everything speeds up.”
Beyond the physical traits, Watson pointed to Rogers’ approach as one of the defining aspects of his game. Rogers is quiet, but confident and takes direction in a way that would make most coaches drool.
“You don’t get a lot of kids like that,” Watson said. “He’s the same person every day. That’s who he really is.”
That consistency shows up in every part of his routine.
“You can coach him hard and he’s not going to blink,” Watson said. “He’s always early, always productive and he’s about his business.”
That mindset, combined with his on-field production, made it clear early on what Rogers could become.
“He’s been that way since he got here,” Watson said. “Very focused on being the best player he can be.
“He just does a great job with everything across the board.”
It’s that combination of talent and approach that made him a priority for Notre Dame and why the Irish staff is elated it will have the chance to coach him at the next level.
