Film Don't Lie | Darren Agu
Notre Dame signed three defensive ends in the previous class who could be classified as projects. They just took a commitment from another recruit who fits that same mold, but Darren Agu is a little bit different.
Someone with only one year of experience playing American football, Agu is only getting started on his football journey. He’s on the ground floor right now, but the ceiling is sky high. He has the physical talent to develop into something special at the college level.
Height: 6’7”
Weight: 235
Projected Position: Vyper
ISD Grade: 88 (3-star)
National Average Grade: 87.7 (3-star)
What he does best:
Guys that are 6’7” don’t usually move like he does. That’s why it’s not a surprise he has over 30 offers. He flashes outstanding quickness off the ball.
It’s what he shows as a pass rusher that should excited Notre Dame fans. He can get the corner and shows an ability to dip and finish.
With his length and that speed, it can make him a very difficult matchup for any tackle.
His motor is impressive. Seeing the way he chases some plays down is a great sign of the kind of effort he is bringing to the table.
What he needs to improve:
Like a lot of inexperienced linemen, he catches some blocks when he’s peaking instead of attacking. It’s something that only comes with time and repetition. Physically he could be someone who becomes a force at the point of attack, but he’s not that right now.
There’s definitely some inconsistency off the ball in terms of snap anticipation and he is very raw with his hands. He’s a big, fast athlete who wins more with that than technique currently. The good news is that we see flashes of elite twitch.
What’s his ceiling?
He’s 100% a take for Notre Dame and probably every program that has offered him because of his ceiling. This kind of athlete with his frame doesn’t come around often.
His film is exciting for all of the potential he shows. Everything he needs to improve, he can do so with time and effort. If he puts in the work and has a passion for the game, he could be a very high NFL Draft pick one day.
He’s someone to watch in terms of making a leap in the rankings as a senior.
Who he could be:
Former Miami defensive end Gregory Rousseau
