After coming to the realization that Notre Dame was the school for him, Sedrick Irvin Jr.‍ sought the stamp of approval from his father.

“He's been on this path before and he's been there the whole way too,” Irvin Jr., said of his father, who was a star running back at Michigan State before playing for the Detroit Lions.

“I know I wouldn't be here without him.”

But Irvin Sr. wasn’t going to steer his son to a particular school before he found his home and certainly wasn’t going to do afterward.

“He came to me and said, 'Dad, I want to follow my heart. I know where I want to be and I don't see myself nowhere else,'” Irvin Sr. recalls.

“I said, 'Well, Son, it's your decision. You have to live it. You have to go there and play. You have to go to class. You have to live in that culture. So it's your decision.'”

Irvin Jr., insisted, telling his father he wanted it to be a “We Decision.”

“And I said, 'As a dad, the way you came to me and how you spoke about the feelings in your heart, even if I had another school for you, there's no way that I can persuade you to go after you told me what you told me. As a dad, I've just got to support you and be there for you.'”

Irvin Sr. is “all in” with his son’s choice of Notre Dame, which he announced on Wednesday morning.

“I know out of the schools he had to pick from, all of them are great schools and all of them had great running back coaches who were well-spoken,” his father says. “I kind of know the history about all of the running backs coaches, so I feel comfortable.”

Irvin Sr. says Notre Dame’s “culture” made a big impression on his son.

“It's everything he's been accustomed to,” he says. “It's the players they recruit. He understands that they get the best offensive linemen, they run the ball and they're one of the top teams in the country year in and year out.

“I think he'll fit in well. He's a north-and-south type of runner, a one-cut guy who gets north and south. He can run behind his pads with power, he can catch the ball out of the backfield. As for the offensive things I've been seeing, I think he'll fit in well.”
