The loss to Cincinnati wasn’t great, but almost everything else about Surahz Buncom’s first visit to Notre Dame on Saturday was.

“It went well despite the unfortunate loss,” the 2023 California wide receiver told Irish Sports Daily afterward.

“Before the game started, I had lunch and got to try on the jersey, take a couple pictures and do a coaches meet and greet.”

One aspect of pregame especially stood out to the Mater Dei Catholic prospect.

“There was a presentation called the GLD Center Presentation, which I took a lot out of,” the 6-foot-4, 175-pounder said. “It means to Grow, Lead and Develop.

“Their main is to help student-athletes after sports, help with their minds, spirit and body, so that was interesting.”

Buncom had a brief opportunity to speak with some Irish coaches prior to the game as well.

“There were mainly just checking in and seeing how things were going at home, just seeing how I was feeling and why I chose to come for the visit,” he said.

Buncom has been interested in the Irish for years, ever since his older brother, Frank Buncom IV, had Notre Dame as one of his finalists before settling on Stanford.

“I wanted to check out the atmosphere and view the game to see how things operate,” he said.

Even with the loss, Buncom was impressed with much of what he saw from the Irish on the field on Saturday.

“I loved the offensive scheme and how the defense rallies to the ball, the secondary coverage, they show great technique, they have insane depth at quarterback,” he said. “I liked the rotation that they had going on.”

Buncom currently has an offer from Pittsburgh and is also receiving interest from the Bearcats along with Kansas, Fresno State and San Diego State.

He’s excited about moving forward with the recruiting process with Notre Dame.

“I'm just looking deeper into the school and what it's about. I've got a pretty great understanding of it during all the presentations that they were going through before the game started. I'm just seeing more of what it's about both academically and athletically. And hopefully, I'll earn a scholarship offer.”
