Adon Shuler‍ joined a group of his Irvington High School teammates on a college tour earlier this month, but the 2023 Notre Dame safety commit made sure the tour included a stop at “home.”

Irvington head coach Smoke Pierre and his players made trips to Ohio State, Akron, Kent State, Kentucky, Toledo, Cincinnati and Indiana.

“I told Coach Smoke that I wanted to go home and see ND,” said Shuler, who was excited to get back to South Bend.

“It was good,” the New Jersey native continued. “It was great. I got to see practice and got to see the boys get after it. It was dope.”

Shuler was fired up to reconnect with Irish safeties coach Chris O’Leary in person.

“I got to see Coach O’Leary and how the defense is looking and how the coaches really coach, so that was really cool,” said Shuler.

“He showed me the new scheme that they’re running and how they think I’d fit in the defense. It’s always good to talk football with him.”

Shuler said his role would be similar to what Houston Griffith and DJ Brown have done.

“As far as the two-high and rolling down and how versatile they are, so it was really cool,” Shuler said.

“We talked a little bit. I stood next to him a few times during practice and listened to how he called plays. He’s from Jersey, so we connected there. I could see he views the game differently coming from the NFL, so that was pretty cool.”

Shuler also had an opportunity to spend time with new Irish defensive coordinator Al Golden.

“We talked a little bit,” he said. “I stood next to him a few times during practice and listened to how he called plays.

“He’s from Jersey, so we connected there. I could see he views the game differently coming from the NFL, so that was pretty cool.”

Shuler’s teammate – 2024 safety Vaboue Toure, who also has an offer from the Irish – was on the trip.

“He really liked it,” Shuler said of Toure. “He told me he didn’t think it was going to be like that. It was more than he expected.”

Shuler said he could notice a different vibe in the program a few months into the Marcus Freeman Era.

“Most definitely. I just feel as though the program getting more intense and full of energy.”

Shuler will be back to see it again for this weekend’s Blue-Gold Game.
