There’s something about Notre Dame that keeps Tony Phillips Jr. coming back.
Well, at least two things actually.
“The environment and atmosphere,” the 2024 Illinois running back told Irish Sports Daily following yet another return to Notre Dame this past weekend.
The Kankaee High School standout was back in South Bend on Saturday for the Irish’s win over UNLV.
“It went good,” the 5-foot-6, 165-pound speedster said.
It was the third trip for Phillips, attended a game last season and was on campus again this past spring.
“We did everything,” Phillips said of his most recent visit. “We did a lot. It was crazy after the game.”
“It was crowded.”
Phillips’ offer sheet currently includes schools like Tennessee, Arkansas, Syracuse, Bowling Green, Miami-Ohio, Central Michigan, Western Michigan, UMass and more.
He had the chance to speak with a couple Irish staff members while in South Bend.
“I talked with Coach Freeman and the running backs coach,” he said. “They’re supposed to come down this spring.”
Irish offensive coordinator Tommy Rees is expected to check in on Phillips as well.
Phillips has been on the road plenty already this fall.
“I’ve taken visits to Mizzou, Cincinnati, Illinois, Tennessee,” he said. “I’ve taken a lot.”
But, with Kankaee entering the postseason, Phillips doesn’t have any other visits lined up at this point.
