2023 Notre Dame QB Commit Kenny Minchey Enjoys Hosting Freeman, Rees
Marcus Freeman and Tommy Rees didn’t need to do much recruiting when they visited 2023 Tennessee quarterback Kenny Minchey last week, which was probably a welcomed setting for the Notre Dame head coach and offensive coordinator.
“It was good,” said Minchey, who committed to the Irish a few weeks back. “It was more so relaxed. They came by, my dad got some food for them to eat and it was kind of just us sitting down and chopping it up really.
“Let’s say I wasn’t committed to a school, that would have been much more of a sit down and kind of talk business, but obviously, I’m committed to them and so it was able to be more relaxed and go with the flow and strengthen a relationship with my family and the coaching staff. I think that was probably the biggest point.”
Minchey had been committed to Pittsburgh before taking an official to South Bend.
Freeman and Rees were major reasons he ultimately made the flip and was reminded why during Friday night’s in-home visit.
“For Coach Freeman, he’s just an overall great guy,” Minchey said. “You’ve probably heard that from a lot of people. I feel like he has his priorities straight.
“For Coach Rees, he’s a young guy. They’re both young, so it’s easy to relate to them and have conversations with them. I just feel like we click.”
As an early enrollee, Pope John Paul II star will be in South Bend for good soon.
“I go up there on the 15th of January,” he said. “I’m super excited.”
Minchey will make his way north shortly after heading to San Antonio to participate in the All-American Bowl.
He believes getting to Notre Dame early will benefit his development.
“Getting in the playbook early, building the coaches’ trust up and being able to bond with the guys before the season comes,” he said of what he expects to get out of the headstart.
