New 2024 Notre Dame RB Target Kedren Young A "Blessing" To Coach

Even more than the college coaches currently jockeying for the opportunity to do it in the future, Gunnar Quick appreciates what it means to coach Kedren Young‍.

“I get the privilege to coach him on a daily basis,” said Quick, who serves as running backs coach at Lufkin High School.

“He's one of those kids who makes my job a whole lot easier just because of how attentive he is to film session, how detailed he is and not only the film room, but the practice field and the weight room and everything that goes on.”

Quick calls it “a blessing” to coach the 2024 Texas back who is constantly leading by example.

“He's a great player on the field, but he's an even better person off the field,” said Quick. “He's one of those ones who’s a very rare type of person nowadays. It's just a blessing because we've got a pretty good coach/player relationship. He's probably the only player that's going to hold my 16-week-old daughter because of how much I trust him.”

Quick points to Young’s size as one of his greatest physical assets.

“He's chiseled,” the coach said. “He's got a running back's body.”

So much so that while basketball players tend to quickly shed weight with all of the running they do in practices and games, Young didn’t appear to when he played hoops.

“It's really God-given,” said Quick.

Young may not be a national name yet, but that isn’t his focus.

“He doesn't worry about that,” the coach said. “All he wants to do is win and do it by any means, whatever it takes. He wants to win and if we don't, he takes that to heart.

“Each week, he gets better and better and there's just no quit in him. Kids definitely feed off that because they see how much success he's having. He doesn't really like the spotlight. He's not one of those kids that's going to flaunt it. 'I just had 300 yards and five touchdowns.' He's one of those, 'Well, did we win?'

The list of coaches hoping to have the opportunity Quick has now is growing.

The 6-foot-1, 210-pounder picked up an offer from Notre Dame on Tuesday to go with offers he already had from schools like Texas Tech, Vanderbilt, Boston College, Arizona, Arizona State and Georgia Tech among others.

“We talked right after it happened,” Quick said of Young receiving the offer from Notre Dame. “You can get the popular schools around here, like Texas, Texas A&M and nationally, you've got Alabama, but nothing compares to the college football tradition Notre Dame has. He knows that and he understands that.

“That's a big one for him. Anybody who gets an office from Notre Dame, it's huge just because of how far it goes back, just the tradition that goes on there.”

Notre Dame is working to get Young on campus for a visit and there’s a good chance that happens.

“He was really excited for it. Wherever he ends up, he's got the support of the Lufkin community.”
