Notre Dame LHP Aidan Tyrell Earns All-ACC Honors
Aidan Tyrell didn’t have to return to Notre Dame for his fifth season, but the consistent lefty chose to come back to South Bend and had a career year for the Irish.
The 6-foot, 165-pounder was honored on Monday as he was named All-ACC Second Team for his efforts in 2023.
Tyrell finished the regular season with a record of 8-2 in 15 appearances (five starts), a 2.74 ERA to go along with 57 strikeouts and one save in 65.2 innings this spring.
The 2.74 ERA was fourth-best in the ACC this season as it only trailed Wake Forest’s trio of Rhett Lowder (1.73), Josh Hartle (2.32) and Sean Sullivan (2.56).
Tyrell started the year coming out of the pen, but became a starter over the last month of the season following Jack Findlay’s injury. In April, Tyrell struck out eight Virginia batters in his game one start and set the tone for the Irish to sweep a top 10 opponent at the time.
Tyrell’s best performance maybe been in the 17-4 win at Georgia Tech where he struck out five batters in 4.0 innings and allowed just two hits. The Illinois native also struck out seven and gave up just one run against Akron earlier this month.
The 2023 Notre Dame captain has tallied a career record of 18-6 with a 3.36 ERA and 147 strikeouts in 187.2 innings pitched.
Notre Dame shortstop Zack Prajzner was left off all three All-ACC teams following his best season in an Irish uniform.
Prajzner batted .300 with 43 runs scored, 60 hits, 14 doubles, one triple, seven home runs and 31 RBI, while also recording a fielding percentage of 0.971, the best of his five-year career at Notre Dame. The California native also started and played in all 52 regular season games this season.
The snub was a little surprising as Prajzner not only had a fine season, but was Notre Dame’s most consistent and clutch player all year.
“I’m proud he’s allowing himself to play,” said Shawn Stiffler earlier this month. “He’s such a fiery competitor. Early on when I met him, I felt he could get in his own way. He’s really hard on himself. I’m really proud of him. He’s let himself really relax and let himself play. I have so much respect for him.”
