2024 ATH Brauntae Johnson Entering Home Stretch of Recruitment
2024 North Side (Ind.) athlete Brauntae Johnson is in the home stretch of his recruitment as the four-star prospect plans to take three official visits in June and hopefully arrive at a decision on his future.
The first trip will be to Notre Dame on June 4th and from there Johnson has official visits with Purdue and Tennessee on deck.
“At this point, I’m really just trying to make a decision,” Johnson told ISD. “In the next couple of weeks, I’ll get to visit at least three schools. I’ll be at Notre Dame first, which is coming up this weekend. I want to be sure of my decision.”
Johnson has been on several visits, so the North Side star has a good feel of what he wants - or doesn’t want in a school. He’s seen the bells and whistles. The focus will now be on academics, relationships and figuring out which position he wants to play as he’s being recruited to play both sides of the ball.
“It really just depends on the school,” explained Johnson. “If I went to Notre Dame, I would play safety and the two other schools, I would be playing receiver. I’m really just in the process of making a decision on the school and position.”
Relationship building is essentially the same for Johnson despite having offensive and defensive coaches recruiting him. It comes down to who he can trust and just an overall feel of who can help him achieve his dreams as a football player.
For Notre Dame, it’s been a collective effort as safeties coach Chris O’Leary has led the charge, but head coach Marcus Freeman and Director of Recruiting Chad Bowden have played significant roles and even receivers coach Chansi Stuckey visited Fort Wayne in the winter to watch a basketball game.
Purdue has probably been the most consistent with its effort on Johnson over the last six or so months since Ryan Walters arrived on the scene and Tennessee has also consistently been a presence following an offer last July.
“The relationship is really what it’s all about,” stated Johnson. “I want the relationship with the coach to be great. I’d say it’s really no different, but you’re just talking about two different positions. It’s how you feel with the coach, how comfortable you are with the coach and how well they believe in you.”
Johnson doesn’t have a commitment date in mind, but there is no denying he’s looking forward to making a decision in the near future as he wants to move past the recruiting process and focus on his senior season.
“At the end of the day, I am getting ready to go to the next level,” said Johnson. “I want to do it with my mind focused and have the stress off my back. It’ll be a sigh of relief and I can focus on my senior year and what’s ahead.”
