Notre Dame was looking for two running backs in the 2024 recruiting class and the Irish have accomplished the mission as 2024 Lufkin (Texas) power back Kedren Young‍ has given a pledge to Marcus Freeman and Deland McCullough.

“It's not even just about the name,” Young told ISD. “It's about the opportunity. It's a great school, great people, but it is what the degree could do for me. The football program is amazing. The degree is top-notch. It’s going to be a great opportunity for me when I'm done with Notre Dame, I'll be set for the next 30 years of my life.”

The 5-foot-11, 225-pounder made his first visit to Notre Dame this weekend for his official visit and McCullough delivered as he has so many times on the recruiting trail.

“His resume, he coached in The League and now he's coaching in college,” Young told ISD earlier this month. “He won a championship. He has all the credentials. We don't even just talk about football all the time. We talk about life and all the other stuff. He's a great man. I like talking with Coach McCullough.”

Notre Dame and McCullough have found ways to get multiple running backs involved in the offense over the last few years and that’s something Young noticed.

“I like the system because he uses all of his running backs,” Young said. “Everybody's got their own role. I think that's important.”

Young is a great on the field, but he’s also an ideal fit off the field according to his position coach Gunnar Quick.

“He's a great player on the field, but he's an even better person off the field,” said Quick. “He's one of those ones who’s a very rare type of person nowadays. It's just a blessing because we've got a pretty good coach/player relationship. He's probably the only player that's going to hold my 16-week-old daughter because of how much I trust him.”

Quick also appreciates the four-star prospect’s mentality. Stats are nice, but Young wants to win more than anything.

“All he wants to do is win and do it by any means, whatever it takes,” explained Quick. “He wants to win and if we don't, he takes that to heart.

“Each week, he gets better and better and there's just no quit in him. Kids definitely feed off that because they see how much success he's having. He doesn't really like the spotlight. He's not one of those kids that's going to flaunt it. 'I just had 300 yards and five touchdowns.' He's one of those, 'Well, did we win?'

Academics were also a big point for Young heading into the visit and Notre Dame has no issues hitting home there.

“If you get a degree from Notre Dame, that's big,” said Young. The academic part is also a big thing.”

Young will join 2024 running back Aneyas Williams‍ in Notre Dame’s class.
