2024 Notre Dame CB Commit Karson Hobbs Prepared To Fight For Future
With his high school football career complete, Karson Hobbs is trying something a little different this winter as he prepares for his college career at Notre Dame.
“I'm actually going to get into a little bit of boxing,” the 2024 Irish cornerback commit told ISD. “No real hard sparring, but for the footwork and the fast hands part of it, that's kind of why I'm getting into it and to also be in really, really good shape all year round.”
One of Hobbs’ freshman teammates at Archbishop Moeller is an accomplished boxer who helped encourage him to give it a shot.
“I've been thinking about doing it for years, just for footwork purposes and quick feet, fast hands,” Hobbs says. “This year, I'll try to put myself through a lot of pain and suffering this offseason, so hopefully it'll pay out in the beginning of next year when I get up to campus…It will be a lot of ladder work, a lot of bags, doing a lot of the hills stuff. Kind of like you're preparing for the fight, but you're really not fighting, you're just doing the work.
“I'm trying to work as hard as possible and just stay in the best shape of my life and get stronger and faster.”
The 6-foot-1, 180-pounder already feels like a better player coming out of his senior season.
“I think just being able to be more patient and start trusting the process more,” he said of where he improved. “Junior and sophomore year, you expect everything to happen so quickly. Then, my senior year just helped me to grow and develop as a leader and just a man in general.”
Of course, he’ll continue to work on his true craft as well.
“The best part of my game is definitely my press man coverage, so just continuing to better that and get better at things that I knew I could get work on is just truly going to be huge in my future,” he said.
Hobbs remains in steady contact with his future position coach at Notre Dame, Mike Mickens.
“We're talking all the time,” he said. “He’s just saying, 'Get stronger, get ready, keep going. Just keep working.'”
He’ll see Mickens and Irish head coach Marcus Freeman later this week, when they conduct their in-home visit on Wednesday.
A lifelong Notre Dame fan, Hobbs will run track in the spring and then report to South Bend next summer.
“It's a dream come true, man. I'm trying to work my butt off this year so I can get the results I want, honestly.”
