Deep down, Matty Augustine‍ had a good idea for a long time, but he didn’t make it official until Tuesday, when the 2025 Connecticut offensive lineman announced his commitment to Notre Dame.

“As soon as I stepped on campus, I felt a sense of belonging and a family feel,” Augustine told Irish Sports Daily prior to making his announcement. “It’s kind of something I’ve had my whole life; going to a small, strong academic private school since pre-K.

“That transition from a small high school that is academically-oriented is a perfect fit for Notre Dame as a small, private institution with great academics and great football.”

The Brunswick School standout gives the Irish 17 verbal commitments in the Class of 2025.

Augustine chose the Irish over his other finalists; Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio State and Penn State along with a host of other offers.

The 6-foot-7, 290-pounder visited South Bend multiple times over the last couple years, including a trip to the Irish’s Lineman’s Challenge last June, when he earned his Notre Dame offer.

Marcus Freeman and Joe Rudolph played integral parts in Augustine’s final decision.

“You have Coach Freeman who is the best college football head coach and also Coach Rudolph, who is the best o-line guy you can get,” Augustine said. “I’m just super excited.

“I’ve watched his meetings and seen how he’s coached on the practice field. He’s set up such a great chemistry in that room. Just seeing those guys being able to coach each other on the practice field and when Coach Rudolph needs to step in, he gets it done. It’s great to see the whole chemistry in that room.”

Augustine gives the Irish a trio of offensive line commits in the Class of 2025, joining Owen Strebig‍ and Will Black‍.

“It’s unbelievable,” Augustine said. “I’ve had a really good relationship with both Owen and Will. I’ve known Owen a bit longer, seeing him on many of these visits, including many to Notre Dame and some to Wisconsin. We’ve definitely built a really good relationship. We text every day.

“I’ve gotten to know Will Black a little better. He plays in the same league as me, so we have that connection. We have a group chat with the three o-line commits. We talk in that a lot. It’s unbelievable. It’s going to be a great group of guys playing next to each other. I just can’t wait.”

Augustine also joins his Brunswick teammate, roommate and good friend, safety Ethan Long‍ in the Irish’s 2025 recruiting class.

“It’s amazing,” Augustine said. “It’s kind of cool to see two roommates go to the same college. I’m super happy for him.”

And after a lengthy recruiting process, Augustine is happy for himself as well.

“It feels great. I’m just super excited because I know I definitely made the right choice. Everybody there already seems like family to me. I couldn’t be happier to be enrolling there next January.”
