Notre Dame Catcher Carson Tinney Done for Season with ACL Injury

Notre Dame freshman catcher Carson Tinney will miss the remainder of the 2024 season after suffering an ACL injury over the weekend.

The 6-foot-3, 220-pounder hit a grand slam in Notre Dame’s 13-0 win over Boston College on Sunday afternoon before leaving the game at the beginning of the sixth inning.

“During Sunday’s game vs. Boston College, catcher Carson Tinney began experiencing soreness in his left leg,” the Notre Dame baseball program said in a statement. “After evaluation from the medical staff, it was determined this week that he had torn his ACL. He is undergoing treatment and will have surgery after final exams.”

It’s a significant loss for the Irish as Stiffler has rotated Tinney and junior Joey Spence for most of the season. Tinney has made 28 appearances with 15 starts this season while batting .268 with three home runs and nine RBI.

Behind the dish, Tinney has a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage. The Colorado native also recorded a season-high two hits three times against Boston College, Miami and NC State.

Spence, who is hitting .286 with three home runs in 27 games and 18 starts, will likely see more work with Tinney’s injury. Senior catcher Tony Lindwedel has appeared in 18 games (eight starts) and will likely be the next guy behind Spence. Freshman Davis Johnson has seen time in three games with one start, while touted freshman Troy Reader has not seen action yet in 2024.

Notre Dame (20-19, 5-16) will host No. 8 Wake Forest (26-14, 11-10) this weekend at Frank Eck Stadium. First pitch on Friday night is set for 6:30 PM on ACC Network Extra.
