Notre Dame has been searching for an interior defensive line prospect and landed its guy on Sunday afternoon as 2025 St. Xavier (Ohio) defensive lineman Gordy Sulfsted‍ committed to the Fighting Irish.

The 6-foot-5, 240-pounder is familiar with Notre Dame as he camped and worked with Al Washington last year.

For Notre Dame, the projection is an easy one and that’s current defensive lineman Rylie Mills. Sulfsted will likely arrive lighter than the 275 pounds Mills brought to South Bend his freshman year, but the builds are similar. Sulfsteed has the length programs crave on the interior, but will need to add the weight over the next few years once he enters Loren Landow’s strength program.

There are good genes in the family as his father, Alex, played offensive line at Miami (OH) and was a sixth-round draft pick in 2001. The elder Sulfsted played for the Bengals, Chiefs and Redskins during his NFL career.

Sulfsted had official visits set to Duke and Wisconsin, while Ohio State had recently visited to evaluate him as a tight end.

One source in the South who is very familiar with Sulfsted believes Notre Dame is getting a quality lineman with a high ceiling.

“Liked him a lot,” said the source. “I liked the length and production. I think he will grow into an inside guy. He’s talented.”

As a junior, Sulfsted was credited with 41 tackles, 6.0 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks in 12 games. One of his best games came against Lakota West, when he was virtually unblockable.

The Ohio native will join Florida defensive lineman Davion Dixon‍ as Notre Dame’s two interior prospects, but Joseph Reiff‍ could also end up inside as he’s checking in at 6-foot-5, 245 pounds heading into the summer.

Notre Dame now has 21 commitments in the 2025 recruiting class and remains No. 1 in the country over Ohio State, Oklahoma, USC and Clemson.
