Notre Dame RHP Caden Spivey Enters Transfer Portal
Notre Dame sophomore RHP Caden Spivey has entered the NCAA Transfer Portal and becomes the fifth entry since the Irish season ended.
The Georgia native will join pitchers Matt Bedford, David Lally Jr. and Ryan Lynch, along with catcher Tony Lindwedel, as the latest departures from the program.
Spivey will finish his stint with the Fighting Irish with a record of 5-2 in 30 appearances (4 starts) and recorded 49 strikeouts in 62.2 innings pitched.
As a freshman, Spivey made a statement in his first appearance against Georgia Tech and it catapulted him into a key relief role in 2023 where he finished with a record of 4-1 (4.11 ERA) in 15 appearances.
In 2023, the 6-foot-1, 195-pounder began the season as a starter, but after three weekends, Spivey was moved to the bullpen, where he finished the year 1-1 with an ERA of 8.46 and 24 strikeouts while pitching through a nagging injury. He set a career-high for strikeouts with four against Radford in March.
The decision to leave Notre Dame is significant for the Irish. Spivey was likely set to be the top reliever at minimum, but someone who could start and provide crucial experience. He was also another pitcher who was throwing in the mid-90s by the end of the year, which is something Notre Dame lacks on its current roster.
And as with Bedford and Lally, Spivey will have no shortage of options due to his potential.
