Hitting The Road: Chase Wiliams
Written by Alec Swain
After visiting Notre Dame a couple weeks ago, Chase Williams
is set to continue his college search with a trip to Nebraska for the Cornhuskers’
spring game.
Williams is an impressive athlete who can potentially play on either side of the ball at the next level. Notre Dame seems to be open for him to play either offense or defense, and it will be interesting to see how other programs project him.
Nebraska is looking to impress a lot of talent this weekend. In addition to Williams, Brendan Radley-Hiles and other talented prospects will be on campus. Nebraska has a strong staff and it would not be a surprise to hear of a successful recruiting weekend following the spring game. Notre Dame even has links to the Cornhusker staff as Bob Diaco, Bob Elliott and Scott Booker are all coaching in Lincoln now.
Williams has been busy this spring with trips to Notre Dame, Ohio State, Arizona State, and now Nebraska. He does not seem to be as locked to the West Coast as many talented California prospects have been in the past. However, the typical Pac-12 threats cannot be overlooked.
It is fair to say Williams is doing his due diligence and looking at what every school has to offer based on his unofficial visits. It requires legitimate interest to take an unofficial to Notre Dame from California, which the Irish took advantage of when he visited campus. Now, it is important for the Irish to keep pushing in this recruitment to remind Williams of his potential in South Bend and the opportunities he will be presented on both sides of the ball.
Nebraska should be taken seriously, as the Cornhuskers have done well in recent years in recruiting under head coach Mike Riley. Plus, Nebraska has been a force in the state of California with recruits like Lamar Jackson and Elijah Blades. If Nebraska chooses to pursue Williams as a wide receiver, he would have the chance to be surrounded by a ton of talent. With the speedy Eric Fuller in the fold, Williams would definitely present a different, more physical challenge for opposing defenses, as well as being an athlete and a playmaker.
The Cornhuskers’ receiver talent will not be limited to this upcoming 2018 class, as they brought in a very impressive class in 2017. They were able to flip Tyjon Linsey, one of the best wide receivers in the 2017 class, from Ohio State. They were able to land Jaevon McQuitty despite being from Columbia, Missouri, home of the in-state Tigers, and despite being Mizzou’s bitter rival. Lastly, they were able to take another wide receiver from California in Keyshawn Johnson Jr. Both McQuitty and Johnson Jr. are early enrollees and already campus in Lincoln.
Notre Dame has a chance in this recruitment, but will need to be constantly reminding Williams of his time in South Bend. Williams has visited multiple schools this spring from all over the country and it will be important to ensure he remembers his impressions of Notre Dame and its vast amount of opportunities.
