Coach | 2025 OL Commit Cameron Herron Will Add Plenty To Notre Dame

Mike Kirschner had long been convinced Cameron Herron‍ would be a great fit for Notre Dame.

“One, he's a great student academically, first and foremost,” Kirschner, the head coach at Warren Central High School says of the 2025 Indiana offensive lineman.

“Secondly, he's a really good football player. He works really hard at being really good at football in the weight room out of season, in season.”

So Kirschner wasn’t surprised to see Herron flip his commitment from Iowa to Notre Dame earlier this week.

“I think it's a better fit for him,” the coach says. “He's closer to home. His parents can get to more games. He's real close to his family, so this was important as well.

“Notre Dame's always been kind of a dream school for him. We've been kind of back and forth with them over the last year in the recruiting process. They came down a few weeks ago. I got to talk to Coach (Marcus) Freeman and them. They really liked the way he was playing his senior year and his toughness, and I think that helped sell it.”

Herron had been on the Irish’s recruiting board for months, taking unofficial visits in the winter before a dominant performance at Irish Invasion in June. Despite not receiving an offer until late in the process, Herron never became disillusioned.

“It says a little bit honestly about his character,” Kirschner says. “He was doing what he had to do to get noticed by Notre Dame. Obviously Coach (Joe) Rudolph was very high on him. But, like all the schools, there are only so many scholarships available and they're only going to take so many at this position. He knew kids from other places were already committing, and so he was OK with that.

“It wasn't personal. We talk to our players all the time that the recruiting process isn't personal. It's not that they like you or dislike you, it's what they've got to do to fit their roster and their needs and their scholarship limits and all those things. None of it's personal, so when things change, don't take it personal. Deal with it and move on because that's life.”

Kirschner is convinced the Irish made a score in landing Herron.

“Physicality, toughness, arm length, hand size, the physical attributes they look for,” the coach says of what Herron will bring.

“The size of his hands are NFL-sized hands. When you look at people that are measured at the Combine, his measurements are the same. And his physicality and work ethic.”
