Notre Dame OL Commit Matty Augustine Talks QB Commit Blake Hebert
Anybody who understands how much Matty Augustine cares about the culture he’s helped secure at Brunswick Academy, has an appreciation for who Blake Hebert is as a person.
Augustine, along with fellow Notre Dame commit Ethan Long and others have helped create an almost tangibly strong culture at Brunswick. When Hebert transferred in at the start of the year, they welcomed the new quarterback and it didn’t take long for them to trust him in a leadership role for the Bruins,
“I think it was definitely good that he came in January because by the time we got out to spring and summer training, everyone trusted him and welcomed him in as a leader because they knew he was the right guy to lead this team along with us,” Augustine says.
“Really all it is trust. Make sure everyone trusts him at the end of the day.”
Augustine trusts Hebert enough that he’s been recruiting him to join himself and Long in South Bend.
“I've been in his ear ever since he came here,” Augustine laughs.
But at the time, the Irish had Deuce Knight committed at quarterback and Hebert was committed to Clemson.
Things changed in an instant las month, though.
“I looked at the text; Oct. 2nd,” Augustine recalls. “It was right after we heard that Deuce decommitted. I was right in his ear about it. I honestly got in his ear about the 40-year decision.”
Augustine and Long’s pitch, coupled with that of the Irish coaching staff, resonated with Hebert, who made the switch from the Tigers to the Irish on Oct. 14th.
“It's amazing,” Augustine says. “I know how Notre Dame is going to change all of our lives who are going there.
“The coaching staff's amazing. Gino (Guidugli), for him, is going to be amazing. (Mike) Denbrock, (Marcus) Freeman, all of them, all the coaches are the greatest in the country. But also, like I said, the 40-year decision.”
Hebert is going to be great for Notre Dame too, according to Augustine.
“He's been a great leader, he's been a great teammate, he's been a great everything in school out of school,” says Augustine. “We love him on this team and being able to protect him for this year, but also in the coming future is an amazing feeling.”
And Augustine says Hebert is going to bring plenty on the field as well.
“Look at his build. He's 6-4, what is he weighing in at? 220. He's a big guy, but he can move, he can throw the ball. He can do everything on the field, and that's what we want at Notre Dame.”
