2026 DL Simote Katoanga Goes In-Depth on Third Visit to Notre Dame
2026 JSerra Catholic (Calif.) defensive lineman Simote Katoanga quietly made his first visit to Notre Dame in May and returned to camp a few weeks later.
Notre Dame offered immediately following the workout and made the 6-foot-5, 250-pounder a significant priority ever since.
On Saturday, Katoanga returned for his third visit to Notre Dame and it left a lasting impression.
“This was my first game day experience in South Bend,” Katoanga told ISD. “The atmosphere and the fans were amazing and definitely different. I got to connect with my guys Coach (Al) Washington and (Marcus) Coach Freeman and watch them go to work live.”
The Irish defense was dominating and Katoanga was able to see the interior of the defensive line not only play at a high level, but register five sacks between Donovan Hinish and Rylie Mills.
“The defensive line and defense were physical and making plays,” stated Katoanga. “The held FSU to only 3 points and defense made a bunch of plays. Great to see when everyone on the defense was playing great.”
Notre Dame’s performance also led Katoanga to see a great fit in Al Golden’s defense, as he can be a chess piece.
“I feel like versatility and my physicality can add to this team’s identity,” explained Katoanga. “I feel the way they play with passion, I can see myself adding that to Notre Dame and able to move around the defensive line can help make the defense stronger.”
It’s not a secret Notre Dame needs athleticism and size on the defensive line, which is why Katoanga has become a priority target for the Irish in 2026.
Washington has emphasized it to the California native during his recruitment and drove it home over the weekend.
“The message from Coach Washington is that I’m a player they need and not just a player they want,” Katoanga said. “He said come be developed to become the best by the best. Notre Dame is not for everyone and is going to challenge me physically and mentally, but choose to challenge myself over being comfortable.”
How does one become comfortable?
Well, making three visits in six months is a good start. Saturday’s environment was eye-opening for Katoanga and an experience he likely won’t soon forget.
“Great energy from the fans, to the staff, and even the environment,” Katoanga explained. “Great atmosphere all around and different from other places I’ve been around. Coach (Chad) Bowden and Coach (Caleb) Davis really took care of my family and I, made us feel welcomed and a priority.”
Katoanga’s focus will now turn to finishing his junior season on a strong note and then he’ll dive back into recruiting in the offseason.
“Up next is just finishing up my football season and continuing to build relationships with coaches and programs as I go through this recruiting process,” said Katoanga. “I’m hoping by the spring, I can start to narrow down the list that I will be focused on visiting and committing to in the future.”
