Coach: Hubb A Point Guard With Versatility

Many analysts list Prentiss Hubb as a shooting guard or a combo guard, but the 2018 Washington, D.C. prospect’s coach says he’s a point guard all of the way.

“I think it’s because they’re guys who don’t talk to the right people,” Gonzaga College High School head coach Steve Turner says when asked why so many have the 6-foot-3, 185-pounder listed otherwise. “He’s played point guard on his AAU team all of his life. On my team, we play two point guards in the backcourt at the same time, so there are times when he’s off the ball, which I think adds to his versatility.

“He’ll be the primary ballhandler for us next year. We just graduated Chris Lykes, who’s going to Miami and was one of the top point guards in the ’17 class. At times, when they see these guys, they assume because he’s off the ball that he’s a two-guard, but he is a point guard.”

Still, Turner is quick to point out Hubb’s tremendous versatility as well.

“His ability to not just be a one-dimensional player,” the coach said as to what’s allowed Hubb to become a national prospect. “Certainly, he’s a point guard first. He has the ability to make other guys around him better.

“With that ability, he also has the ability to score the ball and can score it at all three levels. One thing that doesn’t always get talked about is his ability to defend. He’s a long, lefty athlete, he gets his hands on a lot of balls. The other thing I think goes unnoticed is I think he’s one of the best rebounding guards in the country. His versatility is what I think has gotten him an opportunity to get recruited at an elite level.”

Hubb has narrowed his focus to four schools, Notre Dame, Maryland, Villanova and Virginia. He’s in the midst of trying to get an official visit to South Bend scheduled for this weekend.

“I think it’s a combination of things,” Turner said of Hubb’s interest in the Irish. “One, they’ve shown him that he’s a priority for them. As he narrowed his list, he looked at all of the things that they have to offer.

“That’s certainly why he’s trying to get his visit set up to try to sit down with them face to face and really talk about that more in depth. The education, especially coming from a school like ours, which is a big-time academic school. The school he went to before us for middle school was the same way. He’s a kid who values the education. The conference that they play in. And Notre Dame is Notre Dame. He’d have an opportunity to be at a place where what he’s gotten here at Gonzaga is the best of both worlds, they offer that for him and meet a lot of the criteria he has in terms of trying to make a decision on what’s the best school for him.”

Off the court, Hubb would seem to be a fit for Notre Dame as well, according to his coach.

“He’s an outgoing leader, a kid who gets along with everybody, he’s fun-going. He’s your average kid who puts an emphasis being the best he can be in whatever he’s doing.”

Hubb doesn’t have a timeline for a decision, but is expected to have one relatively soon.
