Notre Dame Staying After 2026 CB Commit Chaston Smith
Chaston Smith committed to Notre Dame way back in December, but the Irish haven’t quit recruiting the top 2026 Tennessee cornerback…neither have other schools for that matter.
Irish defensive backs coach Mike Mickens made the trip down to The McCallie School in Chattanooga last Friday to check in and remind Smith why he believes Notre Dame is the place for him.
“He was just talking about how good I'll fit in the program and just how excited they are to get me up there for my official,” Smith told Irish Sports Daily.
Smith sees the same things.
“Just because Benjamin Morrison,” the 6-foot-2, 170-pounder. “I kind of relate my game to B-Mo, so I think I'll be a great fit over there in a great environment and just the way they play man-to-man and like my attitude and how I approach the game.”
Smith will be back in South Bend for an official visit beginning June 13th.
“I'm very excited,” he said. “Just to see what it'll be like to have an on-campus experience while I'm there.”
Smith will be one of several Irish defensive commits and top targets who will be in town for an official that weekend.
Smith said the group has been talking in anticipation of the trip.
“It'll be a very great, fun experience and moment,” he said. “We're really excited to get out there for real.”
Other schools continue to pursue Smith heavily as well.
At the moment, he said, after Notre Dame, the school coming in the heaviest is North Carolina.
Smith acknowledged it being special to be pursued by a coach like Bill Belichick, but it doesn’t sound like that’s enough to get him to reconsider his decision.
“It's an honor to be recruited by somebody like that, but it's very tough,” he said.
“It's very tough to be recruited by them just because I'm so locked in with Notre Dame right now.”
