2019 Bergen Catholic (N.J.) running back Rahmir Johnson received a good surprise last week when he got to school.
“It was in the morning, and I had some breakfast, and then my coach told me Notre Dame was there to ask about me,” the 5-foot-10, 175-pounder told Irish Sports Daily. “It was a good surprise.”
Defensive coordinator Mike Elko was on his whirlwind tour of the East Coast and made sure to get information on the rising sophomore.
“He wanted to know about my grades and stuff,” explained Johnson. “He had told my coach that they liked my Hudl video.”
The New Jersey native was fired up Notre Dame was in town asking about him, and Johnson already knows quite a bit about the program.
“I definitely would have interest in Notre Dame if they started recruiting me,” he said. “I am very familiar with the program, and I know a lot about them.”
Johnson is a speed back, and he isn’t afraid to state speed is his biggest asset on the field.
“I utilize my speed a lot,” explained Johnson. “I like to run outside and get the corner. I like to outrun people, but I like to run in between the tackles as well. I am a balanced running back with speed.”
It’s also not a surprise Johnson runs track. He ran a personal best 6.57 in the 55m dash this winter and just came back from the historic Penn Relays.
“We ran the 4x100,” Johnson stated. “I saw Notre Dame was doing pretty good. I had my eye on them.”
On the recruiting side of things, Johnson holds offers from Boston College, Pitt, Rutgers, Temple, and Toledo, but several schools are evaluating the speedster.
“Rutgers is recruiting me the hardest right now,” Johnson explained. “Coaches are analyzing my tape to start the recruiting process.
“I have been to Rutgers and Temple so far. I’m trying to get out to Notre Dame this summer for camp.”
Johnson grew up watching Alabama and Oregon, which aren’t bad schools for a running back, but he is also making sure he is set up for life after football.
“I am looking at the environment at all the schools,” said Johnson. “Education is a key for me. I want to major in Finance, so I want to go to a school that has a good Business program.”
