James Halter had to hit the road early Sunday morning from South Bend to get back to Pennsylvania for a noon practice with his Central Catholic High School teammates.
So, it was a quick visit for the 2027 offensive lineman, but it was an eventful one for him to be sure.
Halter committed to Notre Dame during his return visit for the Irish’s game against USC.
“I really love the team culture there and it's somewhere that I feel like I fit in very well,” the 6-foot-5, 270-pounder told Irish Sports Daily.
Halter landed his Irish offer during his previous trip to South Bend for the Texas A&M game last month. He chose Notre Dame over offers from schools like Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan State, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Pitt, North Carolina, NC State, Duke, Boston College, Indiana, Arkansas and Auburn among many others.
“It's a great feeling,” Halter said. “Now, I can just focus on our season and not have to deal with any of the other recruiting stuff.”
Halter said Irish offensive line coach Joe Rudolph, assistant offensive line coach Rob Delaney and the entire staff was “very excited.”
“I love them,” Halter said of Rudolph and Delaney. “They're great.
“They really care about what they do and they do it well.”
Halter was able to spend a good chunk of the day with the other commits in attendance.
“They're really cool,” he said. “I like them all.”
Halter’s father, Jordan, played offensive line for Notre Dame in the 90s and while that was a factor in his process, it was a small one and not a decisive one.
“It was important, but it was my decision at the end of the day. It wasn't like, ‘My dad went here, so I have to go here.’ But growing up, watching them definitely played a part.”
