Less than a month after receiving an offer from Notre Dame, Karlos May made his way up to South Bend from Alabama for the Irish’s game against USC earlier this month.
“It was a great game,” the 2027 Alabama defensive lineman told Irish Sports Daily. “It was a great atmosphere. The game was exciting, the whole game.”
The Ramsay High School standout felt the Irish defensive line held up nicely against the Trojans during their 34-24 win over their rival.
May had the opportunity to speak with multiple staffers while on campus.
“I got a chance to talk to the assistant head coach, head coach, my coach, the Director of Recruiting,” he explained. “I got a chance to pretty much talk to a lot of people on the coaching staff.
“They just basically said how I was wanted and needed by the school and how they'd be a great fit for me and how me going there would change the trajectory of the defensive line.”
The Notre Dame staff talked about the 6-foot-3, 305-pounder’s motor, quick-strike and get-off.
For his part, May liked the Irish coaches.
“I feel like they're really good people there and everything,” he said. “They're genuine people based off what they say and the way they bring it to you. I feel like they mean everything they say and they're not going to sugarcoat it. They pretty much give everything to you the way it is.”
May’s offer sheet also includes schools like Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Florida State, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Texas and Ohio State among several others.
While in town, May also had the opportunity to spend time with some of the Irish’s commits in the Class of 2026 and some of their top targets in the Class of 2027.
“They're the type of people that I should and I could see myself being around in the future because they pretty much seemed like they have their heads on straight,” said May. “So I know that would be a great fit for me.”
May will take trips to Ohio State, Alabama and Auburn later this season and said returning to South Bend in the future is also a priority.
“The next step is just getting back down there, taking another visit, talking to all the coaches, trying to see where we’re at and just evaluating from there,” he said.
“They're a great program. What Coach Freeman has done, he made the program even better. Everyone over there seems like they're real close and a real family. They're willing to go harder for each other.”
