2018 North Fort Myers (Fla.) cornerback Joe Wilkins Jr. hosted Notre Dame for practice last week and hoped an offer would come his way. On Tuesday, defensive backs coach Todd Lyght offered the 6-foot-2, 175-pounder and told him how he would fit into the Notre Dame defense.

“Coach Lyght likes my size and wants me to come play defensive back,” Wilkins told Irish Sports Daily. “He liked my length and how I come out of my breaks. He felt I could really fit into his defense and wants to communicate with me more.”

The offer made the Florida native’s day, and it’s an offer he is taking very seriously.

“I was ecstatic,” stated Wilkins. “He was telling about how Notre Dame will set me up for life after football, and that’s what I wanted to hear. He wants me to get up for a visit, and he was telling me about how much a scholarship was worth at Notre Dame.”

Lyght also made sure Wilkins knew about his background, and it’s one that appeals to the North Fort Myers star.

“Coach Lyght wants to me to come up and meet the staff,” explained Wilkins. “He just seems real down to earth. He told me how he was a first-round draft pick, won a Super Bowl, and he accomplished everything a kid wants to achieve.

“Along with the education at Notre Dame, the fact Coach Lyght has done everything I have dreamed of, it really puts him and Notre Dame high on the list.”

With the offer in hand, Wilkins will now start planning his trip to Notre Dame. He doesn’t know when he will be in South Bend, but he will be there at some point.

“It’s almost 100 percent that I will be in South Bend,” laughed Wilkins. “It might be an official visit, or it could be an unofficial visit, but I am definitely going to get up there.”
