Notre Dame’s season is sadly over, but recruiting season never ends. The blue-chip train never seems to end for Marcus Freeman’s program either. They just added another one in 2027 CB Ace Alston.
A multi-sport athlete (basketball) with big time production on the football field, Mike Mickens keeps stacking talent on top of talent in Notre Dame’s defensive backfield.
Height: 5’11”
Weight: 175
Projected Position: Cornerback/nickel
ISD Grade: 90 (4-star)
National Average Grade: 90.2 (4-star)
What he does best:
Alston has great instincts and that’s a big reason why his ball production is off the charts. He has over 30 passes defended in the last two seasons.
I love his compete level. He is working through the catch point and breaks up a ton of passes that look like they are secured by the receiver. And he does a great job of planting and driving to the football.
He has an edge and plays bigger than his size. He’s a willing tackler and attacks the run well.
What he needs to improve:
He’s asked to primarily play zone coverage for his high school program. Anyone who has seen him defend in basketball can see that he has the traits to be great in man coverage, but he just hasn’t played a lot of it.
Alston has very good short area quickness, but his footwork can get cleaned up with his transitions.
What’s his ceiling?
Alston is a good athlete, but he’s an even better football player. His recognition skills are excellent and I think his fit at Notre Dame is at the field corner and eventually as a nickel defender.
He has the right skill set to succeed there. His game reminds me a lot of former Notre Dame nickel TaRiq Bracy. Alston has similar short area quickness and instincts, which is what made Bracy such a quality slot defender for the Irish.
