Cam Toomey didn’t need long to decide he wanted to visit Notre Dame.
The 2028 New York defensive end received an offer from the Irish on March 2 and quickly locked in plans to visit South Bend later this month.
“(Director of Recruiting Personnel) DJ Bryant sent me the offer,” Toomey told Irish Sports Daily. “We built our relationship first when they offered me at Penn State and then he went over to Notre Dame.
“He talked to the Notre Dame d-line staff and said, ‘Hey, this is a guy we’ve definitely got to get.’ Then Coach (Charlie) Partridge approved it and they called me.”
In addition to Notre Dame, the 6-foot-3, 240-pounder currently holds offers from Boston College, Cal, UConn, Kentucky and Syracuse among others.
Knowing Bryant pushed for the offer resonated with the Saratoga Springs product.
“I mean it means a lot,” he said. “I can tell clearly they think highly of me and they're definitely excited to have me out there.
“I'm just really excited to meet all of them and definitely build this relationship with them and continue building the relationship with Coach Bryant and hopefully it'll end up being one of my top places in the future.”
The Empire State defender has plans to be in South Bend for the program’s Junior Day on March 21 as he continues to explore a recruitment that is still in its early stages.
“Just being able to see the culture there,” Toomey said of what he wants to see. “And just meeting the other coaches because I know they're such a great prestigious school and I definitely want to get out there as quick as possible and meet them.”
Seeing how everybody within the program get along will be one of the main things he evaluates during the visit.
“I definitely want to see how they interact with their players,” he said. “How the coaches talk and coach up their players. I also want to see their campus and see if it's somewhere I could see myself being every day.
“Same with the facilities and the staff, like the nutrition staff and the strength staff. I want to see if I'm comfortable with all of them too.”
Toomey already has a busy spring schedule ahead.
Following his visit to Notre Dame, he expects to make stops at Ohio State, North Carolina, Syracuse, Texas A&M, Maryland and Penn State.
The goal of the upcoming trips is to begin evaluating the coaches and environments where he feels most comfortable.
“I’m definitely going to try narrowing things down,” he said. “More opportunities are obviously going to come down the road because I still have two more years of high school ball.
“But this will definitely help me see the coaching staffs and who I like and who I want to keep building relationships with.”
