2019 Mater Academy (Fla.) linebacker Mikel Jones wanted to visit South Bend since he heard from the Irish early in the spring. The 6-foot-2, 215-pounder will get his first look at Notre Dame on Thursday as he will visit with his teammate Montavious Brini.
“I am excited to visit Notre Dame,” Jones told Irish Sports Daily. “The coaching staff was excited to hear I wanted to come up.”
The four-star prospect has been in contact with Todd Lyght and looks forward to putting a face with the name.
“I have been in communication with Coach Lyght,” stated Jones. “He said he wants to show me around the campus and everything.”
Jones holds offers from Clemson, Georgia, Iowa State, Syracuse, Temple, and West Virginia. The Florida native will get a look at a few other programs on his Midwest tour and hopes to add a few more offers to his list.
“I am going to visit Louisville, Ohio State, and West Virginia too,” explained Jones. “Clemson, Louisville, and Miami are coming after me pretty hard right now.”
Due to NCAA rules, Jones hasn’t been able to get too deep in his recruiting process and making the summer swing could be important as he can finally get to know the coaching staff.
“We aren’t supposed to talk to coaches until September, so it’s been hard to develop relationships,” Jones said. “I don’t talk to a lot of coaches, and I mostly let my coaches handle it.”
What has been communicated to Jones is that some teams see him as an outside backer, while others see him inside. Jones doesn’t have a preference and feels he can play all the linebacker spots.
“It’s split between playing in the middle or outside,” stated Jones. “It doesn’t matter to me. I feel I can play all three linebacker spots. I play some defensive end too. I can play in the box.”
Jones is still developing his likes and dislikes for programs, but he does know a few things he is looking forward to learning about on his visits.
“I want to meet the players,” said Jones. “I want to see the dorms, facilities, and see how they go about their daily life. I just want to get up there and meet the coaches to see what Notre Dame has to offer.”
