Notre Dame got a quick break from Fall Camp on Sunday, and Brian Polian made sure to make the most of a few extra minutes. Polian got on the phone with 2018 Mater Dei (Calif.) offensive lineman Chris Murray and offered him the chance to play football at Notre Dame.
“I have been talking to Coach Polian for the past few weeks after I got my Stanford offer,” the 6-foot-3, 300-pounder told Irish Sports Daily. “I guess I peaked their interest. He was at Mater Dei when he came by for a spring practice, and he had been following me ever since.
“He told me they had some changes on the offensive line and now they can heavily recruit me. Coach Polian talked to me on the phone last night and officially offered me a scholarship.”
The four-star prospect is well-aware of Notre Dame’s prestige, but also the success offensive line coach Harry Hiestand has had with putting guys in the NFL.
“I was honored to get the offer,” stated Murray. “I know Notre Dame is one of the historic places for football. I always saw them on TV growing up. I am excited and blessed to have the chance to go there. It’s a great school, and I know the offensive line coach has produced some great NFL linemen.”
Murray holds offers from the likes of Arizona, Cal, Louisville, Mississippi State, Stanford, TCU, UCLA, Utah, Vanderbilt, and Washington and he was able to get out to see a few in-state programs this summer.
“I wasn’t able to get to that many places this summer because of my schedule,” explained Murray. “I was able to visit Stanford, UCLA, and USC for a camp. I might be visiting Cal before school starts too.”
The next step for Murray will be scheduling his official visits, and Notre Dame will be a school Murray is looking forward to seeing this fall.
“I am planning on getting to Utah for my first official visit,” Murray said. “I haven’t locked any other visits yet. I am going to have to get to Notre Dame because I have never been there before. I am also going to go Stanford. The rest I will have to schedule and decide on.”
Murray will be using his official visits to see what each program offers academically and athletically, but it will also be a chance for him to simply see if he fits into the environment around each university.
“I just want to see the vibe of the whole school,” said Murray. “I feel like when I go to a college; I can instantly tell if I am going to belong there or not by the feeling and intuition I get. Academics are very important too. I want to see what type of majors they have and what I can balance with football.”
One guy that does know a little bit about Notre Dame is Murray’s teammate Amon-Ra St. Brown. The two haven’t have had a chance to talk about Murray’s newest offer, but that will likely happen later today.
“I will see him at practice later today and talk to him,” Murray stated. “He said he loved the visit when he went up there, but he hasn’t really told me anything much about Notre Dame.”
