Saturday’s practice started with some Lil Uzi Vert pumping through the new and drastically improved sound system inside Notre Dame Stadium.

Former Notre Dame offensive lineman Chris Watt was in attendance.

The Irish started with the traditional tempo drill on the offensive side of the ball. The first group that came out consisted of:

OL: Alex Bars
OL: Tommy Kraemer

Second Group

RB: Tony Jones Jr./Dexter Williams
WR: Miles Boykin
WR: Chris Finke
WR: Chase Claypool
TE: Nic Weishar
OL: Liam Eichenberg
OL: Hunter Bivin
OL: Trevor Ruhland
OL: Aaron Banks
OL: Robert Hainsey

Third Group

WR: Javon McKinley
WR: Jafar Armstrong
WR: CJ Sanders
TE: Cole Kmet
OL: Josh Lugg

OL: Colin Grunhard
OL: Dillan Gibbons
OL: Jimmy Byrne

During tempo, the first-team defense was doing a look period of sorts.
DE: Daelin Hayes
DT: Jon Bonner
DT: Jerry Tillery
DE: Jay Hayes
LB: Nyles Morgan
LB: Greer Martini
Rover: Drue Tranquill
CB: Nick Watkins
CB: Julian Love
S: Nick Coleman
S: Jalen Elliott

Individual drills were next for the offense, as the defense continued the look period with the second-team defense.

Quarterback were working on a variety of throws. Wimbush and Book looked very comfortable and accurate on the day.  The running backs did a variety of ball security and blocking drills. Autry Denson was coaching his guys hard and was on them about the smallest of details.

The receivers and tight ends worked on blocking and a lot of various route drills.

It was then time for some field goal work.

20 yards: Justin Yoon – Good, Jon Doerer – Good
30 yards: Yoon – Good
35 yards: Yoon – Good
40 yards: Yoon – Good
42 yards, right hash: Yoon – No Good, wide right
42 yards, left hash: Yoon – No Good, wide left

It was then back to individual work as the quarterbacks and running backs worked on handoffs, the tight ends did some catching drills, and the receivers did some route work. The offensive line was doing offensive line things with Harry Hiestand.

On defense, the defensive backs worked on footwork, backpedals, and angles. The defensive line worked on get offs, and the linebackers went through their extensive footwork drills without position coach Clark Lea, who welcomed a son into the world last night.

Quarterback and receivers worked on routes together. Head coach Brian Kelly was very involved in coaching up the receivers on Saturday. He was making sure they got up field and was coaching separation. While it was routes against air, freshman receiver Michael Young just moves at a different speed and smoothness compared to the other receivers...it’s that noticeable.

The varsity offense then went into some 11-on-11 look-team work against the walk ons. It was a nice dose of run plays, and it looked like the quick pass game was the focus today. Hiestand was very pleased with what he saw at times from his offensive line in the run game.

The last thing we saw on the day was 7-on-7.
Wimbush

- Complete to Cam Smith for a short gain.
- Complete to Miles Boykin for a 20-yard gain down the sideline.
- Incomplete to Cole Kmet with Nick Coleman providing excellent coverage.
- Complete to Equanimeous St. Brown for a 10-yard gain.
- Incomplete to Tony Jones Jr., who had Daelin Hayes running step for step with him.
- Complete to Chris Finke over the middle for a short gain.

Book
- Complete to Chase Claypool for 10 yards.
- Complete to Claypool over the middle.
- Complete to Javon McKinley for a short gain.
- Complete to Dexter Williams for a short gain.

Redzone 7-on-7
Wimbush
-  Completed check down to Josh Adams for a short gain.
- Throw away. Coverage sack.
- Jones Jr. drop on a tough catch attempt.
- Incomplete to St. Brown after a bobble with tight coverage.
- Incomplete to Boykin.
- Touchdown to Cole Kmet, who had a gorgeous toe tap in the corner of the endzone.

Book
- Touchdown to Dexter Williams
- Incomplete throw in triple coverage. Forced it as play was running out of time.
- Boykin drop in the endzone, and he wasn’t happy about it.
- Overshot Boykin. Incomplete.

The defense was getting stops, and it was impressive. The stops weren’t because of bad or forced throws, but there was tight coverage and not a lot of windows to throw. Wimbush took care of the football and didn’t force anything, but it was an impressive showing from the defense.

When the offense didn’t succeed last year in these drills, it was bad throws or wrong routes run at times versus good defense. The performance backed up Kelly’s comments about the defense being ahead of the offense regarding that period.
