Lejond Cavazos‍ knows all about Notre Dame from his grandfather, who the 2020 IMG defensive back calls “Powpow.”

“My Powpow loves it up there and would love to see me wearing that navy blue and gold!” Cavazos said.

“He’s always been a big fan, that’s his favorite!

Cavazos’ father and his grandparents made the trip out to South Bend for the Irish’s game against Texas A&M back in 2000.

The 6-foot-1,190-pound sophomore will get his first look at Notre Dame this weekend, when he makes the trip out for the Irish’s home finale against Navy.

“I’ve heard the campus is beautiful, so I’m looking forward to that and definitely looking forward to the normal Notre Dame game-day experience,” he said.

The Texas native played his freshman season at Cibolo Steele before transferring to IMG Academy.

He’s got early offers from schools like Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Florida, LSU, Ohio State, Michigan, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Oregon, UCLA and USC among others.

“They just love my range, height, and how much ground I can cover so quickly especially at such this young age,” he said.

“I’ve visited Ohio State and Alabama this season. Ohio State has been sticking out to me a little bit, but I’m not going to rush my process because I have a lot of time left in my recruitment, and just visit schools that I’m interested in.”

Irish defensive backs coach Todd Lyght has made an early impression.

“Coach Lyght has been recruiting me ever since the beginning of this year, he’s come to watch me practice at all my schools, shown great interest in me, so therefore I want to get up there so I can show the interest back,” Cavazos said.

And what did his grandfather think when he found out a former Irish legend was recruiting his grandson?

“It was like Christmas in March for him!” Cavazos said.

It is early, but the standout safety has an idea of what he’s looking for in a college.

“Definitely the relationship!” he said. “I know all schools produce DBs, but it’s just a matter of where I fit in best and which coach has my best interest in football.”

And while it is early, the Irish have his attention.

“Notre Dame is a top five school of mine.”
