2019 Iowa WR Hits The Board With Notre Dame
Darien Porter has an early Power Five offer and the 2019 Iowa wide receiver is on the radar of some other big-time schools, including Notre Dame.
The 6-foot-4, 165-pound Porter made the trip out to South Bend last weekend for the Irish’s home finale against Navy.
“It was a really great experience even though the weather wasn’t that amazing,” the Bettendorf, Iowa native said. “It was a great school.
“We took a tour of their football facility and also their locker rooms. They were both very nice and top-quality stuff. It was really impressive. We also met with their coaches. I met with their receivers coach, had some good conversations with him and then we got to watch the game.”
The conversation with Del Alexander shed some light on how the Irish view Porter.
“We were mostly talking about how I am a prospect and that they don’t say that to everybody,” the Bettendorf High School standout said. “They think I have some skills and tools that are really nice and that they could use, but also different ways to improve myself as well.”
Porter won the Iowa Class 4A 400-meter state title as a sophomore with a time of 48.24 seconds and that kind of speed has caught the attention of college coaches.
“The combination of speed and height is always a good thing and athletic ability in general,” he said. “I get after it and play hard and don’t take plays off. That’s really attractive to coaches.”
He has an early offer from Iowa State, but he isn’t going to allow himself to become complacent.
“It feels really great,” he said. “It gives me a lot of confidence going into the recruiting process, but I also know I’m not done yet and I need to continue all of the hard work and effort into the summer and senior season, but it is very encouraging.”
He was motivated to hear the interest from the Irish.
“Notre Dame is a great program with a lot of tradition,” he said. “It made me feel really good about my senior season and my summer prior to that. It encouraged me to work even harder than I have been.”
He’s hoping this is just the start of a relationship with the Irish.
“Hopefully, I’ll be able to make it back there and stay in touch with the coaches. I really like the University and would love to go back another time.”
