Geordon Porter‍ hasn’t looked back since announcing his commitment to Notre Dame a month ago, but the 2018 California wide receiver had a chance to learn more about what that will mean last week, when Irish head coach Brian Kelly, receivers coach Del Alexander and assistant Brian Polian conducted their in-home visit.

“It went really well,” said Porter. “They went over the reasons they want me to play at Notre Dame and why they’re glad I committed to play there.

“They gave me a view of how things are going to go when I get there and how the schedule is for football players with classes, how many you take and all of that. It was great to learn and see how it’s going to go when I get there.”

The Etiwanda High School standout was encouraged to learn about the gains the Irish made with their strength and conditioning program this fall as well as the emphasis the coaching staff places on academics.

“One thing I did learn is in the weight room, the players actually got stronger during the season,” said Porter. “Most programs don’t have that where players get stronger during the season. It’s mainly in the offseason, so that was one good thing I liked.

“Another thing I liked was, obviously football is a very important thing, but they really think academics is important. They’re like, ‘You’re going to play football here, yeah, but you’re also going to have time to get your studies and academics in to make sure you’re doing well in your classes.’”

Meanwhile, Kelly and Alexander made it clear they’re excited about what the 6-foot-2, 175-pound Rancho Cucamonga native will bring to the program.

“One thing I think that really separates me is my speed,” said Porter. “They said they don’t have too many guys who can run like me, so that’s definitely one reason they wanted me.”

Porter was grateful for the chance to sit down with his future coaches in a relaxed setting.

“It was really good,” he said. “You can go over more things, see how the coaches are. Obviously, it went really well with them.

“It’s a great program with a great tradition and they had a great season, so it was good to talk to them. It was a great thing to sit down with Brian Kelly, a really great coach, one of the greatest coaches to ever coach college football.”

Porter’s father, George, has been instrumental in the lives of his children, including Porter’s brother Grant who plays at Washington State, and was proud to host the head coach of Notre Dame.

“My dad really enjoyed it,” said Porter. “He loves these times when the coach comes in and he gets to ask questions. My dad really loves stuff like that.”

As the Irish look to wrap up their 2018 recruiting class, Porter and another Notre Dame receiver commit have their eyes on a couple more wideouts.

“I know Kevin Austin is trying to get Lawrence Keys, so I might have to try to go get him too. Amon-ra (St. Brown) is a great receiver too, he’s the number one receiver in our class. That’s another dude who would be good to get too.”
