2019 DE Joseph Wetè Talks Notre Dame Offer
Joseph Wetè had an eventful conversation with the Notre Dame staff last week
“We were just talking about how my recruitment has been going, how my season has been going and they said they’re interested in me and were extending me an offer,” the 2019 defensive end from Washington D.C., said.
The 6-foot-4, 220-pounder added Notre Dame to a list that already included schools like Georgia, Michigan, Penn State, USC, Wisconsin, Virginia Tech, Rutgers, Boston College and Duke among others.
“I was excited as I am with every offer I receive,” Wetè said of the offer from the Irish.
“It’s definitely a big one. Notre Dame is a great school.”
He knows a bit about Notre Dame, but would like to learn more.
“I know obviously their academics are top and really second to none,” he said. “Historically, they always have a really good team and a great fan base.”
He doesn’t have any plans to visit South Bend, but doesn’t have any plans to visit anywhere just yet.
“Honestly, I don’t know where and when I’m going to take visits at all this offseason,” he said. “I have to weigh my options and see what’s visits fit me and what visits will be better for me.”
The Gonzaga College High School standout also said he isn’t sure if he’ll take advantage of the new rule allowing prospects to take official visits in the spring of their junior years.
He is friends with 2018 Irish basketball signee Prentiss Hubb, who also goes to Gonzaga, but hasn’t had the chance to speak with him in-depth on Notre Dame.
Wetè understands how fortunate he is to have so many options and will take advantage of those options to find the best school for him.
“The whole package; great academics, great athletics and a really good fit for me,” he said of what he’s looking for in a college. “I’m blessed that I have the opportunity, that’s what I’m looking for.”
Wetè said he plans to put on 20 pounds to get up to 240 by August.
“People in general at first glance, think I have really good pass rush ability,” he explained. “My size with the weight I could put on, they think I could be whatever player the college wants me to be.
“This year, I’ve improved fundamentally. Instead of just being an athlete running around, I’ve gotten better in the run game and everything else. Honestly, I strive to be a great overall player. They definitely see my potential and what I can be.”
Schools are recruiting Wetè to play defensive end and outside linebacker.
Asked if he had a preference, he simply said, “I like football.”
