2020 Michigan LB Says Notre Dame "Definitely" Moved Up His List
After a quick visit to Notre Dame a year ago, Cornell Wheeler had a chance to spend a bit more time on campus this past Saturday after the 2020 Michigan linebacker received an invitation to the Irish’s Junior Day.
“It was really good,” the 6-foot-1, 220-pounder said. “I really enjoyed myself. The campus is beautiful.
“I saw the football facilities, which were amazing. I spoke with the coaches, saw the weight room. It was just nice. They showed me the academic part. I really enjoyed my trip.”
The West Bloomfield High School standout was particularly impressed with the educational portion of the visit.
“It was really good,” he said. “I can tell they’re real big on academics before football and that’s what I care about more.”
Wheeler had the chance to meet new Irish safeties coach Terry Joseph, defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Clark Lea and head coach Brian Kelly.
“They were just saying that they really like me as a player,” Wheeler explained. “They want me to come back so we can get a better relationship.”
He got a good sense of the staff as people.
“The coaches seem like they really care about their players and want to see them do good in the future,” he said.
That’s something Wheeler says he will “most definitely” do, hopefully for a practice or game this spring.
Wheeler has early offers from Michigan, Syracuse and Toledo.
He expects to continue hitting the road in the weeks and months to come.
“I’m going to go to some Southern schools, but I’ll mostly do in-state schools closer to home,” he said.
One thing is certain, Notre Dame moved up his list after Saturday.
“Oh yeah. Most definitely.”
