Notre Dame invited Lukas Ungar‍ to its spring game in April, but he couldn’t make it.

The 2020 New Jersey tight end isn’t about to miss out on his chance to camp in South Bend later this month, though.

“A couple months ago, my coach told me he’d received some emails from Notre Dame wanting to invite me to the Blue-Gold Game and also the coaches’ input on me,” Ungar explains.

“They think I’m a top-tier tight end. They like my athleticism, the fact that I play three sports and they were really impressed with my film.”

The 6-foot-4, 215-pounder was excited to hear from the Irish.

“It’s Notre Dame, so obviously I was really psyched,” he says. “Notre Dame has always been one of my top schools I’ve been looking at. The tradition is like no other, so it’s great to hear that from them.”

The Delbarton School standout is looking forward to competing at the camp on June 16th.

“I’m just hoping to exceed their expectations and show off my athleticism and my willingness to block and catch everything that’s thrown my way,” says Ungar, who already has offers from Syracuse, Rutgers, West Virginia, North Carolina and Maryland.

Delbarton typically sends close to a dozen students to Notre Dame each year and is where current Irish lacrosse standout Jack Kielty and Irish soccer player Brian Finn went.

“Everyone I know who has gone there, whether it be to play sports or just academically, I’ve just heard nothing but good things about the campus life and tradition,” Ungar says. “I just want to see a continuation of that, meet the coaches and see the facilities. I want to put an image to all of the words I’ve heard.”

He has a family connection to Notre Dame as well.

“My parents have been good friends with Tim Grunhard who played at ND and won a National Championship in 1988,” he says. “Their son, Colin Grunhard, is currently on the football team as well.”

Ungar has already made trips to Penn State and Rutgers and has a few other trips on the horizon. He’ll be at Stanford on June 20th, back at Penn State on June 22nd and has a trip to Wisconsin in the works.

Ungar, who is thinking about studying something related to Sports Management, would like to make his decision about a year from now.

“I do want a school that has very high academic standards, not only great football and high competition, but academics are important to me coming from a school like Delbarton. I just want to see a balance of both and a very nice coaching staff.”
