2021 CA QB Tyler Buchner Offered Inside Notre Dame Stadium On Saturday
2021 Bishop’s (Calif.) quarterback Tyler Buchner was the name to watch heading into Notre Dame’s Elite Skills Camp on Saturday and the 6-foot-2, 200-pounder didn’t disappoint.
The California native had the attention of Notre Dame quarterbacks coach Tom Rees from the very start of camp and continued after the camp ended as he worked Buchner out after head coach Brian Kelly dismissed the camp.
“The camp went well, and Coach Rees had me throw after the camp ended to see a couple of things,” Buchner told Irish Sports Daily. “When I was done, Coach Rees offered me on the field.”
Buchner is no stranger to big-time offers as Alabama, Arizona, Arizona State, Georgia, Michigan, San Diego State, UCLA, USC, Utah, Washington State and Yale have already offered the La Jolla native.
The chance to get offered inside Notre Dame Stadium was a moment that was special for Buchner as he had grown up following the Irish.
“The moment was definitely cool,” explained Buchner. “Notre Dame has always been a school I’ve had a lot of interest in and loved since I was a kid. It meant a lot to my family and me. It’s really exciting for me.”
During the camp, Buchner had Rees constantly coaching him up, and it allowed him to get a good feel for Rees’ coaching style.
“The camp was a good time,” stated Buchner. “It was great to get coached by Coach Rees. I love every camp and use them to get better.
“Coach Rees is a good guy. I really liked him. I learned a lot of things with my technique and routes. It was interesting, and I learned a lot.”
Buchner arrived in South Bend on Friday and got a chance to get a feel for campus before the camp on Saturday. He had been to Notre Dame as a young kid, but this was an opportunity to soak in the campus as a recruit.
“I grew up in Chicago, so I had been to Notre Dame when I was a kid, but I don’t remember much of it,” Buchner explained. “Friday and Saturday was my first time at Notre Dame recently.
“Everything about Notre Dame is great. My first impressions were the people and the campus. The architecture and everything is so pretty. You can’t beat the academics and athletic combination at Notre Dame.”
As he heads into his sophomore year, Buchner isn’t focused on his offers, but rather leading his team to a deep run this season.
“The offers are just offers when you think about it,” Buchner stated. “It’s all about getting better and working hard. It’s more motivation for me to keep working hard. The real focus is on my team and having success with them.”
Buchner was fired up to earn an offer from Notre Dame, but he will have an interesting decision moving forward with his recruitment.
As of now, Buchner is committed to Michigan to play lacrosse, so at some point, the California native will have to decide on which sport to pursue at the next level.
“I did commit to Michigan in eighth grade for lacrosse,” said Buchner. “That was before the football thing came. I’m putting lacrosse in one category and football in the other. I love both sports, and we’ll see what happens down the road.
“I am committed to Michigan right now. I committed to a different coach and a new coach came. Lacrosse communication is different because I can’t even talk with the coaches until my junior year because they changed a rule. We’ll see how that goes in the future.”
