2020 NJ OL Chris Mayo Ready To Perform In Front Of Irish Staff
Chris Mayo hasn’t had a ton of contact with Notre Dame in recent months, but the 2020 New Jersey offensive lineman is still set to camp in South Bend for this Saturday’s Lineman’s Challenge with the hopes of showing the Irish staff what he can.
“Since I’m a repeat-sophomore, I haven’t really caught up with a lot of coaches’ contact information,” says Mayo, who transferred to Peddie School in Hightstown, N.J., a year ago and reclassified from the Class of 2019 to 2020.
“I do follow (Notre Dame staff) on Twitter, I just haven’t stayed in contact with them.”
Mayo believes he’s made dramatic improvements in his year at Peddie, which he expects to display during the camp.
“I just want to show them how much I’ve improved in the last year and what this repeat-sophomore year did for me and everything,” he said. “I lost 50 pounds. I can move better. I’ve got stronger pop. I’m more versatile. I can play up and down the line.
“Last year, I was 345 and could only play tackle. I didn’t like guard very much. Now, I can play up and down the line except for center.”
Mayo, who visited South Bend for a game a couple seasons ago, doesn’t feel the need to see or learn much about Notre Dame while in town.“I just want to know how interested they are in me,” said Mayo, who has offers from schools like Auburn, UCLA, Virginia, Tennessee, Maryland, Rutgers and Syracuse among others.
“I love Notre Dame. Notre Dame has been a dream school since I was a little kid. Everything I wanted to know about Notre Dame, I learned already on my last visit two years ago. I’m familiar with the football team, I still football team. I know Brandon Wimbush went to St. Peter’s Prep. I know a lot about the program. I know a lot about the school and I love the school wholeheartedly.
"I am extremely blessed and humbled by the invitation to the camp this weekend. I always can learn something new about my dream school and I look forward to learning new things...being on that campus alone means the world to me."
Mayo has taken recent visits to Rutgers, Penn State and Virginia.
